My source told me that Sony has about 1 million VA display that will be used on the Z1 and after that all the devices will be getting an AH-IPS or a S-PLS display.
S-PLS? From Samsung? |

Hmm, well I was hoping for a good LTE network from Plus here in poland, but nothing in the dorms, so I checked outside and well not bad.
The screen is quite bright, maybe the viewing angles are not optimal and I'm sure I saw better ones in the store but not much one can do about that. I am not a fan of the launcher sony uses, the screen real estate is not used that effectively but thankfully that can be fixed easily.
The camera is quite fast and the quality is not that bad if you ask me. The superior auto is good but I feel I get better results sometimes with the manual mode and 20MP. It is more heavier than I am used to and bigger but the premium build quality is amazing, puts anything from Samsung to shame.
The speed of the device is unbelievable, things open up so fast, search results now instantly almost, no lag ever.
Can't wait for the camera updates and hopefully 4.3 and 4.4. |

i can't wait for my Z1! sadly i have to wait. hopefully there are no more delays and I'll get it tomorrow.
i honestly think fedex was just stupid and though the "and free smartwatch" on the packing slip meant there was a watch inside, when there isn't. As far as i know, no one has stock of the smartwatch 2 yet, right?
Let's hope US customs doesn't find any other issues and it will get cleared for delivery tomorrow. Sigh.. I was really excited to see it today. It is C6903 from the UK, so the screen should be great from what i've heard.
@MNX - depending on how much time you to return your phone, give me some time to do my tests. if i can recreate the issue and narrow the cause or simply don't have the issue, then you can use my tests as proof that yours is defective, or you'll know that yours isn't.

That makes no sense. Why would they use subpar screens for the initial stock, in 3 months Z1 will be forgotten and the talk will be for Z2. Logically they would ship the best screens first and then switch when interest has died down

i still don't believe there is a screen lottery as far as entirely different panel tech is concerned. sure, there is probably a lottery as far as suppliers go, and there may be quality assurance issues that Sony needs to address. but that's it.
one panel type to rule them all..

@moogoo Yeah, not going to return it right away. Going to take a few more shots under different situations first. Do notice that the blur/unsharpening does happen on macro shots too. Also, do some more research on shots taken by other Z1 users out there. But from what I can tell, things don't look too good for my unit. But yeah, parting with the Z1 is going to be pretty hard. Like everything about it, just this supposed defect on the camera is really bothering me. |

Your reason is basically flawed !
If Sony has 1 million va displays than they will use them in xz and xzl instead, not in z1 because xz and xzl are still selling and will continue to sell for at least 1 year more.
"1 million va panels left" could have been said if Sony would have stopped production of xz, xzl but that's not the case and hence

if they really stock up 1 million of them then it probably make more sense to keep those VA panels for future mid end model to low end models. I am pretty sure 5" 1080p will become a standard by next year. |

for canadians in here and other north americans looks like mid-october launch..
http://mobilesyrup.com/2013/0[....]ilesyrup+%28mobilesyrup.com%29
might mean that US launch is around the same time.. but at least you can import from canada and have north american frequencies. I believe Rogers uses the same LTE bands as AT&T..
@MNX - true that. just the hassle of having to return it is enough of a reason. Just wish there was a way to truly test whether it's hardware or software. then you can know whether you NEED to send it back, or just wait for an update..

He's not trying to prove anything, he's just relaying what his source knows. And those 1 mil VA panels might not be just for the Z1. It could still be used for Z and ZL while also used for Z1, Sony just needs to get rid of all those panels. |

The Z1 was received in the Swedish store today and I played with it for a few second, the screen look good, the weight was not that heavy, the screen love finger prints and yes the phone is bigger then Z.
The sad news for me is that I pre-order my Z1 fron sonymobile.se and they have not received any units yet so I have to wait few days until I can try it for real:) Or I just delete my order tomorrow and buy it in the shops |

@amad: so Z1 breaks the world record at Antutu and has the largest Android sensor to date and you're telling me that Z1 lacks power for 1080p@60p fps video recording?
There's a huge sf update in the works, should come in October and maybe even brings RAW along with 1080p/60 video rec...
@moogoo; delayed at 12 miles distance!? That sucks man, hope you get it soon!

I said it lacks the power to do 1080p@60fps with stabilization. Looks like Sony don't want to go 60fps without stabilization as it would show poor results compared to 30fps with stabilization
What I think that happens in Z1 is it takes probably around 3MP video (20-30% bigger than 1080p) then it does software stabilization on it and crops to 1080p. That's why the field of view when doing video on Z1 with stabilization is much smaller than it should be.
