Does the version of wap in a phone affect its ability to view Yahoo messenger? I read some1 in the SA thread who said he registered for esato.com via wap. Something we all thought was not possible. @Angel: what is the version of wap on your phone? U may have to check you user guide for that.

Guys, there are loads of new stuff at http://gosmartmobile.com. Check out:
1. my Nokia 9500 review, and
2. a new section on CDMA mobile data

Don't also forget to check out April's site statistics on the 1st of May!!!

i was never able to get Yahoo or MSN messenger to work on WAP. I gave up after a while. Anybody who succeeds should let us know

@Cool, My wap version is 1.2, whenever i open esato thru wap, i see options wap 2.0 and wap 1.0, i always select wap 1.0, maybe wap 2.0 option will have additional features, but i have not tried it, since my version of wap is not up to that

@coola: I have browsed Esato WAP on 1.1, 1.2, 2.0 and XHTML WAP browsers and I know I have not come across a means to register via WAP yet.

I tried it again just now. Its not there. The guy who made that claim must have registered in his dream or my name is Frank Spencer

I was surprised too! Especially after a mod here had told me emphatically that it could not be done. @Brym! Your joke was really good. Ha! "Wireless..." Is Angelgirl still using yahoo messenger?

About the MobileNigeria issue:

It is too bad that I had to kill MobileNigeria at around the time it was gaining momentum. I'm so sorry that I have upset a lot of people by this move. I honestly feel I had no choice.

Coolapostle, I can understand why you would want to start a forum to replace MobileNigeria. I actually thought AYA was already doing just this! Please feel free to borrow some of the resources I have at my disposal (about 2.5gb of free web space, lots of bandwidth)

However, there is no need to bury Nairaland yet! It is a young forum and there are 118 registered members already! You can access it via:
WAP 1.0 http://wap.nairaland.com
WAP 2.0 http://wap2.nairaland.com
IMODE http://imode.nairaland.com

My to-do list for Nairaland is as high as Mount Kilimanjaro! Anyway, I guess ESATO is the best when it comes to pure mobile discussions.

I know about at least one person who imported a i-mode phone into the country and had problems getting it to work with GloDirect.

Is there no organisation in Nigeria that checks phones for compatibility with local networks before they're imported? In SA the three networks do their own testing, so does the telecoms regulator.

In this case I believe the person travelled abroad and simply brought the phone into the country. There's no body that tests phones as far as I know. Can you send me a link of the website of the organization that tests imported phones in your country?

Lord knows how many times I have come across newspaper ads touting the features of a phone - and i-mode is listed as one of them! As if it would do anybody any good here. No networks outside of Japan and a very few European nations support i-mode, to the best of my understanding.

Testing? Nope. NCC does some sort of screening and has a list of approved handsets. Unfortunately, the list is very dated. The newest phone on the list is the Nokia 6600! That was released in what year?! According to NCC, my 9500 does not qualify. Story!!

@seun: I accepted MN's death long b4 you announced it. I knew it was going to happen. The "why" of the killing was - and still is - what is hard for me to accept. But I guess it does not really matter; or does it?

Anyway, good work on how you have made Nairaland interoperable. Very impressive.
