hmmm...based on engadget review, the battery for video looping test can last more than 12 hours !!!....much more than the GSMarena test. How come ?

The simple answer? because they didn't test the same way. and engadget is using a retail unit probably vs. gsmarena's preproduction.

where are all those battery bashers now? they seem to be scarce when there's positive news..

I'm here, reporting for duty. Engadget turned X-Realiy engine off, hence the result? Anyway, Sony Z1 whitepaper says it's video playback time is up to 400 minutes, which is 6h40m. It makes me really doubt engadget result when even Sony says max playback time is 7h

EDIT: What's more, engadget review of Xperia Z resulted in only 5h35m playback time. With same screen technology, it's practically impossible that 30% more batter juice have 100% better results.

Seems like Z1 is much more stable than the 1020
Is the OIS in 1020 turned off?

Keep in mind that the electronic stabilisation of the Z1 crops the frame quite considerably.
The Note 2 does the same thing on video, and while it is smoother, it can be quite annoying for close up videos, as it appears zoomed in.

@admad - oh hey! there you are.. and yes. as was discussed before, X-reality apparently does make a difference with battery life (among other factors). personally, i think various combinations of features should be tested. My biggest criticism for GSMarena's test is that they compared the battery life against other devices without video enhancement engines. It's an unfair comparison in that respect, especially when you do NOT test it without x-reality for completeness.

@all - my Z1 shipped and will be here tomorrow sadly i won't have time to give a full review til next week, but i will share what i can in the mean time

Here's a quick impression on my Z1. As a shout out, I only had about 2 hours setting it up last night and the half an hour or so of my commute this morning to really play with it.

Let's begin with the sound quality first. First and foremost, I've spent most of my time in ClearAudio+ versus having it disabled. I did not use the bundled headphones, used my own pair of IEM, which is the Hifiman RE-0. Sound quality is good, definitely a lot better than my Nexus 4. Sounds are not bland and boring compare to the Nexus 4. Volume is a bit louder too. I can hear details a lot easier versus having to strain my ears to make them out. Instruments on the background are much more detailed and specific. High's are definitely sharper, so there's more of pitch going on. But, if you have musics that are mostly on the high end and the high notes are really "high" for most of the time, you may here a slight crackling noise. It sounds kind of like a really low profile static. Mid's are great too, treble becomes a lot clearer. The low's are really low and has more depth. This makes the bass more punchier versus your typical thumping noise and it travels rather than just ending it short by cutting it off. The difference between having ClearAudio+ turned on and off is that the latter is more muddle, less depth, which feels like all the different sounds are mixed together. Though you will not experience the crackling noise that I mention before with ClearAudio+ turned off. Now, with it turned on, everything is more distinct and clear. Up to certain degree a bit louder too.

The overall physical shape of the phone, was a bit overwhelming when I unboxed it. First reaction was, it's huge! Which I already knew already. To my surprise, it fits real comfortable in the hand. Even my Nexus 4, which is smaller, was not as comfortable to hold as the Z1. In the pocket, not much different compared to the Nexus 4.

Did notice a few bugs while I was playing around with the Z1. Several of the bugs I noticed belong to the Walkman app. For example, when you open up the app, not the widget, to play your music then close it. The music would stop playing and the app will disappear from your notification bar up top. This is not the case if you play your music through the widget. Another thing is, you lose volume control of your music if you enter the camera app. You will be force to stop your music and close out of the app then replay the music to gain control again. Another bug is, can't seem to get NFC to work with my Nexus 4.... Though that is about the only thing I tested with NFC so far.

Time for the screen, which I'm pretty sure everyone is very interested in. All I can say is everything is "SHARP" and "vibrant". No slight blueish tint that I noticed on my Nexus 4 when viewing whites. I don't see any washout effect until I hit about 145 degrees, that's when I start seeing contrast and color quality go down by a "slight" bit. Though my Nexus 4 does not seem to wash out at all even at 180 degree. Funny thing is, it feels like I'm seeing a bokeh effect on the screen, haha. The center is still sharp and color is accurate.

Well, that ends my not so quick impression of my Z1. Will play with the camera later down the line, and no voice call test yet. Any questions everyone?

I don't think that is a bug. Do most phones not mute the music when you open the camera app? I believe they do.

The music does not get muted. You just lose the ability to change the volume after you enter the camera app. On my Nexus 4, music does not get muted when I enter the camera app. Nor do I lose the ability of changing volume.

Gotcha - is it because the volume buttons serve some other purpose within the camera app?

NFC doesn't seem to work.... Tried it with my coworker's S4. Anyone got a solution to this? By the way, was trying to send an image from the gallery/album on both phones.

Looks like it, you use the volume rocker to zoom in and out. Though if you have music playing, your volume bar still changes level, but not volume actually changing. Also lose the ability to zoom in and out too.

^NFC doesn't work between phones? or doesn't work at all? do you have tags to test it on or an accessory?

Also, i know it's silly and obvious, but make sure it's turned on and that android beam is turned on. You can have NFC turned on (works with tags and accessories) but android beam turned off (to share pics between phones)

Nevermind, NFC works. You have to literally aim it at the NFC symbol in the back and you have to be super accurate.....

Didn't even bother trying the stock earphones. Screen is great if you ask me. Like I said before, washout effect did not come into play until viewing it at 145 degree. Don't really have a black Z1, nor a black Z, to compare to my white Z1. I've had black phones for the past 8 years and I'm sick of it. Actually wanted the purple one, but can't get it, so I decided on the white instead. Remember, "beauty lies with the eye of the beholder".
