@baseballfanz try the my-symbian forum

@ajack I installed 1.4 beta 2 and it solved one of my problems and sorta solved the other. With 1.4 beta 1 I tried to set up a database for Network info and it would give me an error everytime saying that it couldn't, but the new version solved that. My soft reboot issue has sort of been solved. Before it would turn the phone off and that was it, I had to turn it back on manually. Now it turns it off and starts it back up, but brings me to the flight mode selection dialog. Should it be asking that upon soft reboot? I thought I read somewhere that this was supposed to bypass that.

The same thing happens when you change fonts. The phone seems to take a very long time to re-boot (I thought it had just switched off!) and restarts at the power on / flight mode option screen.

Very minor gripes though. Nice work ajack, Sman 1.4 seems much more stable on my branded phone so far

@bredator,

the flight mode configuration is in phone preferences, as is the password option (locks). So you can disable both options, and the phone will boot up without need to intervene.

Hi all,

I have posted the below message to most of the other sites I frequent to. Since I can't upload the v1.4b3 to this forum, please contact your favourite file pimp for the beta.

------------------

Hi all,

Attached is SMan v1.4 beta 3. It fixes the SMS options in Network Info.

The only thing outstanding is the reboot code can take as long as 45 seconds to reboot a P910. Thanks to all for testing.

-ajack

PS. Droll says that he might add another feature into SMan v1.4 but we are not sure yet if that will happen.

this new build will also give me the opportunity to check out how the SMan zip utilty works. I have been meaning to try it, but haven't had anything to unzip. I will report back later.

I am interested in knowing users impression of the ZIP module. For starters:

1. Is it faster / slower that other ZIP utilities for UIQ devices. If if so, how much faster/slower is it?
2. Is the user interface easy to figure out.
3. Is the FIle Manager's enhancement to support ZIP easy to use.
4. Which do you prefer, ZIP module's menus or using it in File Manager.

I have only used jZip which was a lifesaver (albit slow on the menus) plus you can now password protect your data into a ZIP w/ password.

@ajack

1. It seems pretty fast. I'd say its faster than Zipper, which is what I have used in the past. Zipper took about ten seconds to extract the file, while the Zip utility took one or two.

2. The interface could use a tiny bit of help. "View Contents" just doesn't sound like the option to open an archive. I do like the contents and log tabs at the bottom, and that it automatically switches you to the log tab if you select extract. I don't like that you have to set up a folder that it always saves .zips in and another that it always extracts to. There should be an option to always use a location, or ask every time. This option would allow you to select a different folder each time as the archive is being packed/unpacked. In general I just don't like getting error messages to set things up the first time I run an application.

3. The integration with the File Manager is excellent, it automatically opens archives with the Zip utility. This is just as convenient as the browser built into the Zip utility. Also it is obvious, if you are familiar with the File Browser, how to create a .zip file.

4. I think I liked File Manager better because I could more easily see where the file was, and I could go right back and browse for the files that I extracted. I tested making archives both ways as well as unpacking them and I am just more comfortable with the File Browser. One minor suggestion though, if you started from the File Browser, you should be taken back there when the .zip is finished being packed/unpacked.

Overall this is a well implemented Zip utility and feels like it has been fully integrated into SMan as if it has been a feature for a long time.

Found out a few more things about the reboot option:

-It is still very slow to shut down the phone if Bluetooth is active
-It will shut down the phone, but not start it back up if the phone is connected to a power source. It shows the logo screen then it just shows the battery charging meter, but never powers on.

good feedback on the zip module. will take that into consideration.

for those who don't know, the zip/unzip operation has been coded to happen in the background so that while it's working, you can still go back to other applications or other portions of sman and continue doing stuff. however, the phone will slow down because of the extra CPU cycles being consumed for archive processing.

@knight4led:

Your feedback is the most constructive I've seen in a long time of beta testing (not saying that others were bad), but your feedback gives me a general impression of the product and I hope to explain our decisions on this.

1. Thanks for that, now I know SMan's ZIP module is one of the fastest if not the fastest ZIP utility around. Like I said, have only used jZip before this and it being Java based was slow.

2. Droll decided on the "View content" as the file does not stay "open" or "locked" when you view it's contents. I will write in the manual that you need to configure all these things (ZIPping and unZIPping folders) but I thought that it was best that when I select a file, choose unzip, I know exactly where the unpacked files go. One place to keep ZIP files and another to unpack them into makes less problems for users since I do know that people have asked this type of questions since the day a packer was written (ie. Do you know where my unpacked files are stored? etc...). Also, when you get an error trying to do something, people tend to do it immediately instead of doing everything before trying to use. If you get what I mean.

3. Yes, we tried to integrate the File Manager with the ZIP module as seamlessly as possible. One reason why we had the centralized location for ZIP and unZIP. That plus you can actually configure just before ZIPping to change the location of the created ZIP file.

4. I actually use the File Manager's ZIP extensions more than the ZIP module's own interface. But you have to start somewhere and this way, people know there is a ZIP module in SMan. I kind of like the switch back to File Manager what ZIP is done if called from File Manager comment, but will leave it to Droll to decide since it's cosmetic and all I do now is configure it to long-press of the hotkey to get back to File Manager.

Actually, the ZIP module has been in SMan for about four months and how we define the UI is me using the module and recommending the UI and changes to make things easier/nicer. To the UI in SMan is (good or bad) mine to credit.

Thanks for the reboot feedback as well... Droll is looking into it...

Now, care to comment on the other new features? or must I list them out like the ZIP module... LOL!

the reboot option is a little more tricky as we're using publicly known code for reboots. there are a few things that i'm tweaking at the moment to see if it works but so far no luck i have a feeling undocumented APIs (read: pay symbian for the APIs - about USD15k if i recall) will get you the same reboot sequence (and timing) as that used by manufacturers.

there is so much more that we want to do with the device but cannot because we don't know the API calls, and we'd prefer to stick by the book so that it works across different manufacturers and UIQ versions. daaaaamnnnnn....
