"Free RAM after boot-up (and after all homescreen widgets had loaded) was 46MB, but I'd expect this figure to rise in future firmwares, up into the mid 50MB range, at least."

WTF!! DOES THE NOKIA N97 ONLY HAVE 128MB OF RAM? YEP JUST CHECKED ON GSMARENA.128MB'S IT IS.IS THAT GOING TO BE ENOUGH FOR THIS MONSTER?

STEVE LITCHFIELD'S 'FIRST GLANCE' AT THE NOKIA N97
"Am I excited by the Nokia N97? Yes, it offers a huge step up from my current 5800 XpressMusic, with comparatively few disadvantages. Do I want one? Yes, definitely. Is it the perfect smartphone, one that will please everybody? The usual answer: No. Camera fiends will be looking for 8 megapixels and above, with Xenon flash. Email and office fanatics will be looking for a much better (and more standard) qwerty keyboard (see the E90 comparison photo below). But those are two extremes of phone use, there's a big space in between where the N97 will do almost everything you ever ask of it and will most things very well indeed.

The original N95 was a watershed device that opened people's eyes to what was possible. The N97 finds itself in a much more competitive world but, with a little firmware love from Nokia (in the same way that the N95 received attention), might possibly be another phone in the same class. Time will tell."

CAN'T WAIT FOR HIS MORE IN DEPTH REVIEW.

@ gola:

It's an old newspaper reprint that was lying around in a friend's motorbike clothing shop.
He brought it home to show me.

I haven't tried the cam yet; he took a few indoor happy snaps after we downloaded a whole raft of games from Mobile 9, but it was quite late by then.
I'll be putting that cam it through its paces the next time that they're here.

@ Hintza:

yitwave's comments also caught my eye:

"2) The camera quality is very good. Once you push down the protector, the camera mode comes on in less than a second. The focus time for snaps is only about 1 second in good lighting, which is nearly equal to consumer point and shoots. This is fantastic and makes taking pictures SO much better (i am a Canon DSLR user normally). I can take 2 or 3 shots in the time the iphone or HTC devices take 1 picture. The camera button also has great depth, so you will definitely be able to press half way to focus before taking a photo. this is really important as i HATE unfocused shots. Macro is also good, there is some depth of field i.e bokeh / background blur which is always nice. Contrast is high, pictures a bit saturated but thats what you expect from non DSLRs."

I hope that his brief dabble with the phone's cam is an accurate enough reflection; if it's the same cam module as the N82 et al, that would certainly suffice for punters like me. I'm not at all arsed by the fact that it's not 8mp or more.

@ Gucci:

The Dark Side's S60 Sith Lords will be deeply moved by such a petulant statement from within the Inner Sanctum's ranks, LOL.

(and with that, Darth Gucci carefully steers his Imperial N-Fighter away from the Empire's increasingly-expanding Planet Touchscreen...)

Already another 12mp Samsung (non-smartphone, apparently) on the way, with 3X optical zoom:

Gola
Its the RAM, and CPU. RAM is 128mb which just aint cuttin' it in such an expensive high-end smart phone of 2009, and the CPU is weaker than N82/N95/E90s. (overall)
By the way you heard this "new" artist Drake? Checkout his track Uptown featuring Lil Wayne, not bad at all.

Lol, I'm not much of a "under the bonnet" kind of guy. Just as long as the general specs are above par and it looks good, then all's good. And the n97 design is one of a kind Same goes for motorcars...

I'll check that song out, my internet connection sucks right now Haven't heard of him though...

Whats wrong with me I no longer get a hard-on for cellphones. Probably the only phone that still makes my spine tingle is the iPhone and that will soon be replaced in a couple of weeks by a new, more expensive device.

Eish brixtser, maybe we're becoming so conditioned with the constant, relentless advances and exposure that it kinda becomes 'everyday' stuff.. and perhaps we're just getting older too, LOL.

Well that's Dr Wanqa's diagnosis anyway.
