I read that the phone has a major component flaw. If this is right then how come websites have reviewed it like Bengalboy? I know there pre production but they prove the design works?
I was after a P990I but can't afford it, can't wait, don't want a phone that big, will treat it's functions as gadgets rather then need them. So I'm after a K800I
But as with regards to waiting for a newer model, on the expansys forums they talk of a Cybershot P990I to be released in Febuary next year.

I certainly hope that this is true. I am so tired of waiting and have desided to cancel my preorder for the P990 if the phone is being delayed once more, and find an alternative instead. Those constant delays is getting rediciolous already

Any rumours of an upgraded P990 have probably been started in this topic (and others like it) by people tired of waiting an eternity for the new phone.

You'd have to be pretty naive to think that Sony Ericsson aren't working on a successor to the P990. The question is when are they likely to launch this?
If they've invested heavily in the P990 they're going to want a return on that investment, so I believe this will launch and be available for several months.

Ideally for SE they'll want the P990 out for at least a year before replacing it, however as the hardware specs for this phone are almost a year old already, they may be forced to update the timeline for it's successor.

So when would SE want to release the P1000 (or whatever it'll be called) ?
This probably depends upon the competition. If Nokia release something that looks a lot better than the P990 then you can bet SE will be hurrying up with their successor.

All we can do is wait ... and wait ... and do some more waiting ...

I think we need a new letter for the successor to the P990.

The ones used before (or in-use) are:

T39 - 'T' for telephone?
K750 - 'K' for camera?
W950 - 'W' for walkman?
P910 - 'P' for PDA (thanks dr_thug)

I think we need:

C700 - where 'C' is for Communicator (like the Nokia 9500)
Q007 - where 'Q' is like 'Q' in James Bond, a series for gadget freaks!

they did it with P900 to P910...so can we expect some minor software/hardware changes of P990 like 3.2mpx cam,M2 etc??

I thought SE P series was more of a competetior with imate and all Windos based phones...not nokia...they still lag behind in such feature rich PDA style phone.

@jeh,
P=PDA
S=Swivel

wonder what J stands for...

A bit off topic but interesting, so far we have:

T39 - 'T' for telephone?
K750 - 'K' for camera?
W950 - 'W' for walkman?
P910 - 'P' for PDA
S??? = 'S' for Swivel
M600 = 'M' for Messenger

So what is the prefix for the successor of the P990? Any ideas?

'Q'
'X'
'C'

?

Where did you read about this component flaw??

To be honest I can't remember, I stumbled across it the other night when googleing for P990 news so take it with a pinch of salt. I did think it fits though considering the long delay the phones had so a component fault isn't fantasy as the M600 proves the software is working to an extent.
I would agree with a P990 upgrade, it may be held back till this time next year as the P990 was supposed to of been out at the begining of the year then an update in feb would of been correct. A Cybershot P990 sounds pretty good to me though.
How ever I hope for you guys n gals the wait is over soon and you can get your new toy. I have to wait for my K800 to be released on Orange as just my luck it's the best signal for where I live, Voda and O2 are less then 50% strength in my area
