Thanks for posting that info. It sounds like they want to be Google preferred bedfellow and that they are working very close. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for next year and I'm glad they've committed to getting up to speed with the OS versions.

They seem to have turned around the quality of the handsets, the hardware designs seem to win people over too. That just leaves the software, which they are working on getting up to date.

Really sad isn't it? Someone said they'll take profits over market share which made me wonder exactly what they meant. More market share means more profits. Yes, SE has a higher average selling price but imagine if they sell or ship more phones with that high selling price.

I'm sure Motorola has shipped more than SE's 10.4 million units since they were at almost 10 million the last quarter. SE is more than likely at number 7 with HTC breathing down their neck. Next year they'll definitely be at number 8 and having to worry about Huawei. How pathetic would that be for a former number 3 mobile manufacturer?

It is still possible to get a top 5 position but they need to be bold and clever.

I think they should give me a job so that I can rescue them

Because if you make expensive handsets you'll sell less, but have higher profit margin and thus could have higher profits. In that way you'll lose market-share, but obviously making profit is more important. You can't just make expensive phones with high profit margin and maintain high market share at the same time

Wrong! You can sell a lot of phones at high prices and still increase your market share. Apple is doing it and they are constantly increasing their market share. HTC are steadily increasing their market share and they hardly have 'cheapies'.

The point is SE can make even more money and increase their market share, it is how they adapt to the market conditions that determines how far they can go.

Another interesting interview with Bert the savior on Di.se.

- HTC and Samsung biggest competitors (great news imo, was afraid they had apple or worse nokia still..)
- Gonna focus on design to make the most appealing handsets.
- Take cool technology from Sony, talks about some new nightvison thingy for the camera and the ability to connect with DLNA to other gadgets.
- The big cuts recently didnt effect research and development.
- Atm they are the biggest contributer to the android project and they work closely with google to be up to speed with android versions.
- Symbian is dead and its resources are being redirected to android.

Full interview (swedish):

That is really the way to go! This is the sort of strategy that will help them a great deal.

Lol at Symbian being dead. I have always said they should dump it, I started saying that after they killed off the wonderful UIQ. It is good that they finally decided to completely ditch it even though I always thought they have unofficially ditched the woeful S60/Symbian. Now it is official which is superb cause now they can contribute greatly to Android and be able to give Windows the needed support.

Two smartphone OSs and their A-platform are enough for them to be able to spread their limited resources much more efficiently.

Good move that!!

Yeah, but SE aint Apple. HTC too chose for profit in stead of market share, only they are doing it a bit better, so their marketshare is growing actually. But you'll gonna have to go for either high profit or high volumes (and thus market share). Whether the other one is following depends on how good your phones are doing in the market.

I think SE will focus more on Android because they can both benefit from each other. Google gets Sony's playstation or gaming strength which Google needs to counter Windows's Xbox, and Apple's offerings. On the other hand, Sony gets tight support from Google and hopefully makes more stable and up to date phones. Google needs Sony/Sony Ericsson, Sony/Sony Ericsson needs Google. Just my two cents though

That is what I've been saying all along. Strategy, great and competitive products, great support, timely or quick releases will make SE Apple in no time. I threw Apple and HTC in there because you said you can't make profits and increase your market share when your prices are high.

SE don't need to be anybody but themselves. They need to revisit what made them special when they were on top of their game a few years ago. Having Ericsson and Sony as the parent companies makes them very powerful, it is how they choose to use their potent heritage to kick butt.

HTC are increasing their market share which in turn increases profits. They have said they are intent on shipping 9 million phones this quarter which tells you that they want more profits.

SE has fixed their build quality and their reputation has recovered to a certain degree. Their software engineering has improved, it is just that they are too slow in almost all areas that is holding them back.

Your post just agreed with what I've been saying all along- that SE needs to adapt to the market conditions to return to glory days and become a top 5 player once more.

The last interview posted by motvikt is exactly the direction they needed to take and they are taking it which augurs extremely well for the future. I'm now very positive after that interview that they are going to pull out all the stop next to be at the top end of the scale when it comes to excellent products in every way.
