another shootout .. DM3.8 vs VIT EMS
if comparison is to be accurate...well then everything would have to be on auto!
you have dm3.8 with colour correction..[that's not auto]
if you had used saturation control on ems1.1 you would have got better colour
auto must be auto full on both
I disagree with you here.
The DM Color correction is an AUTO setting in my eyes. You set color correction On or Off, and it stays that way even when you close the camera and come back in.
Yes, Vit's driver has the ability to tune the saturation, which is great, but then you have to manually adjust the levels.
That is not an ON or OFF option, like DM's color correction.
I am not saying DM's color correction is better, only that it is an AUTO feature in my eyes.
Why don't you take some comparison shots yourself then, since I seem to be the only one willing to make the effort to do this, and my only goal is to help the community produce the best driver possible, whether its Vit's EMS or DM's.

@jake20 and @edwardob
I think you both right. you just have different perspective about the "AUTO shot" term.
Lets cross our finger for a moment. Vit is working on perfecting his v1.2. He said it will solved many issues including manual ISO I hope.

@fe1ixs
agreed
If Vit's driver had the manual ISO control, and manual shutter speed control, then it would be hands down the BEST driver, no doubt about it.
Vit, what do you think?

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I intended to offer manual ISO, but as you've noticed, once I had the intention of reducing the number of manual controls in order to make it less complicated, I've decided to put it aside in spite of other controls that seemed more important to me. Anyway, I'm still trying v 1.2 and with that I guess that issue can be more or less solved.
@VIT
could you explain a bit more how the JPEG table works? I was trying to get the least compression image (around 6MB size). The quality was great with minimal noise and crisp. But I couldn't get it work on every shoot.
Regarding ISO, I think if you add the manual setting, it won't make things more complicated. You can follow the CBE setting if you like (with EV adjustment), so you can have more spaces for other controls. just my 2 cents. Thanks
Yeap, I agree with you. But as the people claimed for a less complicated driver, I've come up with this more simple one. I will think about bringing manual ISO back to the game, but, like Jake said, I guess that manual shutter speed for non-flahs shots would be more of a help than manual ISO, so perhaps I could try to concentrate on that for a future v 2.0 realease of the EMS driver. Untill then, you may try to play with Spot Metering. Sometimes it makes up for much better shots than with Normal Metering. Give it a try.
Regarding JPEG tables, I do not know that much about them, but I know that they are used by the processing algorithm in order to convert the RAW file (the unprocessed image) captured by the camera to a JPEG file, which contains less information than the former. The highest the values for that table, the more quality the shot will present and also the more time will be needed for it to be processed (all that in theory). As every pixel contains different info about light and color between shots, not every picture will come out with the same size after being processed, as the algorithm may treat them differently according to that. Again, I am not an expert, perhaps someone else can explain that better than me.
Here you've got some examples of quatization tables for some camera models:

@ superleeds:
I've used auto mode + manual saturation @ -0.3. But the Auto mode should provide similar results. Have you tested it? Take a look @ my changelog for that driver on one of my last posts. There you'll find some notes on how to get better results for flash shots of people.

so, what if i want to take an indoor shot, with auto focus settings, but the camera selects ISO 400 for me, when I would like to use maybe ISO 100 or 200?
how do i accomplish this?
I want to give your driver another shot, but not sure about how to take some pictures in different settings.
Every indoor shot I am trying to take on auto settings is set for ISO 400.
I want a lower ISO without having to use night landscape mode.
this is easily done in DM3.5/3.8 , but how can I accomplish this in EMS 1.1?
I think manual ISO is absolutely critical to have.
thanks

Well, have you tried to change Exposure Compensation settings in Auto Mode? That may lower the ISO. Indoor with poor lighting is critical for this phone. Either you go for the combination of low ISO and slow shutter speed or you go for high ISO plus fast shutter. I usually try to play with Exposure Compensation while on Auto mode or selecting Twilight Landscape mode for slower shutter speeds. Anyway, I agree that regarding this aspect you'll probably be better served with DM's driver, although I still think that color wise mine would perhaps be better.

Jake, please post EXIF info for your slow shutter pics. ISO, shutter speed, etc.

Edward, I guess that we share the same preferences in terms of color! Your pics seem very good; precise contrast and well balanced exposure. Could you please post 100% crops of some parts of them? Thanks!

@Vit
Here is larger 5MP version.. again, i took this on AUTO Focus mode, not twilight Landscape, because I did not have anything to put the camera on for support.

here are some shots from dm 3.8
full auto, non-flash - auto iso 400, spot (notice the focus was sharp)
here is I'm experimenting with auto and set the iso manually to 100. crank up the shutter speed to +2.0, spot. Focus a bit off because I have to turn down the shutter speed to allow more light (underexposed otherwise - make it sensitive to shake).
auto, manual iso 100, spot
twilight landscape, iso off (iso 125)
Happy thanksgiving everyone!
