It's a durability-issue. The phone connector last longer if it's on the side of the phone.

the side fast port is for charger only/usb only  all  phones from now on will have a2dp and all phones will be backaged with a new a2dp capable headset (similar to hbh-ds970) as standard .......
kidding!  though i wouldnt mind that at all.....

You had me going then for a while, though it is a good idea. Why shouldn't they provide wireless stereo BT headsets as standard - especially on the higher-end phones.

They may have put the fast port on the side so that they can make a tripod accesory. If there was a tripod accessory it would make sense for them to use the fastposrt to attach it to the phone. It is only a thought, it might be there as they didnt have room to put on the bottom/.

I really wish they would dump that huge port and go for the mini-USB, especially now they have put it on the side as it really detracts from the look of the phone

I agree. It would be useful as there are a lot of things using mini usb now so I always have one plugged into my pc.

yeah, me too. not just my V3 and windows mobile phone etc but even my Garmin GPS uses mini-USB!

at the moment it looks as if its just ai tomorrow.....
3gsm is the event we should be more concerned about afaik
but of course theres always the possibility of more than ai being shown tomorrow...

Plus 3GSM is only 1 week away 
The Euro Bravia phone is rumoured to be showcased at 3GSM but the Japanese SO903iTV won't be in production until later on this year which has confused me a bit.
A 'slate' of phone will be upon us according to an official honcho - lets hope he is telling the truth.
