^yea they are pretty good, but definitely can be improved! for Superior Auto, I think it does really well. Post processing definitely needs to be reduced to preserve more detail. But, this is simply a software fix. I wonder if someone can mod the camera app using the open source libraries to turn off post processing or turn it down to essentially nothing, just to see what the results are from the camera alone. obviously, raw format would be ideal, but i'm wondering if something can be done using the libraries sony has released to the dev community.

It would be nice if they can allow us to shoot in RAW! Especially the ability to save JPEG & RAW for the shots taken. I'd like to do my own post processing to be honest.

MNX - of course! that would be the ideal. but even dedicated point and shoot cameras don't have that option, so having it in a slim smartphone is gonna be very rare. I just wonder if there is a way to modify the camera app on the Z1 to decrease or eliminate some of the post processing all together, giving us as "raw" a photo as we can get..

btw.. did you get your Z1 yet? I just got confirmation that my order has been sent to dispatch, so hopefully I will receive tracking information later today.

@Moogoo To bust your chops, the RX100 allows raw shooting.
My Z1 is coming in today and will receive it if my super is in the building........ Also, refreshing my tracking every 5 seconds in hopes that it does not say notice left,

Z1 vs Note 3 camera shootout http://sonyviet.vn/2013/09/xp[....]-dau-camera-voi-galaxy-note-3/

Note 3 comes out on top based on THOSE photos. I hate to sound like a broken record, but I really hate these photo shootout comparisons that do not give all the details of settings, conditions, and full res images for examination..

in general, based on those photos, Note 3 has better color saturation and dynamic range and sharper photos. I really can't wait to get my Z1, get it updated, and take my own sample photos to really test the Z1's camera ability..

but you really have to admit that only the center of z1's photos look sharp. sony really needs to correct this. hopefully, this is not hardware-related. in almost all photos i've seen, softening immediately occurs outside the small focus area. the z1 fails to maintain sharpness in landscape photos. i really hope you can get better results once you get your z1.

@Moogo As much as I like to take a sick day, was actually sick not too long ago, so it would be weird to take one again.
Just refreshed my tracking again.... This is turning out to be an addiction and an anxiety... Maybe I do have the Xperiatitus Z1 strand, shipping phase.....

Oh, and I bought the Sandisk Extreme MicroSDXC 64GB, can't wait till that comes too. Finally I can put my entire library in my phone, including all those FLAC files I've built up. It's been 2 years since I had my entire library in my phone.

Just want to mention that the Z1's G Lens have an f-stop of 2.0. So depending on the focus used and/or aperature setting, you get the effect that you mention, which is called depth of field or commonly known as bokeh. Where only the focused area is, well, "focused" and everything is blurred out.

I dont believe the f-stop can be blaimed here, plenty of other phones have the same f-stop without blurry edges. Also, Shouldnt objects aligned at the focus point still be sharp?

is off out soon to get some low light/night time shots, again I will use superior auto mode as I don't really have a clue when it comes to manual mode. The photos will be on here very soon.
I'm so happy 'cause today

@tyko - you are correct. even with F2.0, if objects are at the same distance from the camera, they should be just as sharp as the object being focused on. However, bokeh is affected not only by aperture but also focal length and lens to focal point distance. I intend to test the Z1 to determine if the blur on the edges is really bokeh or a software issue. Should be a fun experiment!

the problem is that it happens in superior auto mode for landscape pictures. you don't want landscape photos to have that kind of depth of field effect. as much as possible, most parts of the photo should be sharp.

@miromiro - that's true. but Z1's aperture is fixed at f2.0 with a 27mm focal length. With a wide aperture and short focal length, depth of field is fairly good (i.e., it's not too shallow, but also not incredibly deep). The remaining factor then is distance from focal point to the lens. That, is up to the photographer. However, regardless, objects at the same distance from the lens as the focal point should be at the same level of sharpness throughout the photo. If Z1 is unable to produce a result like this, then it could be another factor that I am not aware of. I confess, I'm not super advanced in my knowledge of photography and lens tech perhaps razec can assist.
