I think the big sellers of Sony this holiday season will be its low and midrange phones. I saw a lot of Xperia J/Ion/S/U on Instagram, but also quite a few T and V. The Xperia J seemed to be the most popular one though.

don't forget xperia tipo...
it's also very much popular in some asian countries. For abt 2 or 3 months it was among the most popular phones on gsmarena

Yeah Xperia Tipo. The Xperia Miro and Go are also quite popular. Next year I think the share of highend phones will be a lot higher for Sony with the likes of Yuga/Odin/Dogo/Phablet coming in the first half of the year.

@Sami: Could you elaborate?

EDIT: Just searched for #xperiav hashtag and most of the pictures were posted by Swedes. So I guess you're right lol! And Instagram is my new research tool.

Here is an Article about the phone written in Swedish but then translated into English from me

Super mobile - durable, slim and stylish "

Xperia V get good reviews from the experts saying that
Rugged and waterproof, does not equal ugly and clumsy.
the new super phone Xperia V is celebrated by magazine M3,
"It's tough, slim and elegant," writes the magazine.

Sony has launched a new generation of smartphones - which outperforms most phones when it comes to durability. Waterproof Sony xperia V is the flagship and its awesome performance, stylish design and estimated camera challenged the top-sellers in the market.

"Can take great pictures"
And the handset has received good reviews from the experts. In the newspaper M3, Xperia V gets 8 of 10 in rating. In the test writer Mattias Inghe specially talks about the new super camera.
"Sony has inserted a 13-megapixel sensor and has (to be a camera phone) quite decent optics in front of it. Fast autofocus and a smart camera-app with easy handling and things like smile detection also do their part. This means we can take great pictures, "he writes.

"Not ugly and clumsy"
Although the screen, durability and design are reasons that the mobile gets top marks.
"Sony Xperia V is once again a smartphone that can withstand the stress of elements while not being clumsy and ugly the Magazine wrote

"Excellent phone"
M3 is not the only magazine that celebrates Xperia V. Also mobil.se gives phone top marks.
"Waterproof Sony Xperia V with high resolution screen, 4G and a smooth style deserves to be a big seller," the newspaper said, and continued:
"Sony Xperia v is an excellent phone that had stood well on its own even if it were not waterproof and had 4g. Now it should be on the wish list for anyone interested in a new Androidphone this winter. "

@sami: Great, thank you! It seems like it's a big hit with the owners too. If only Sony had gotten the V out earlier, it could have sold a lot more. Soon it will be overtaken by the upcoming 2013 Xperias phones. Did you get yourself a V or still waiting for the Yuga?

Intel expected to show new smartphone platform at 2013 MWC

Intel is expected to unveil a new smartphone platform, and new Atom processors based on 22nm and 14nm processes featuring lower power consumption, at the 2013 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, during February 25-28.

This could be interesting. Sony should consider it if it delivers enough processing power and has low power consumption.

Problem is, you need to convert Android to support x86, which will mean slower updates. That and you're now susceptible to x86 viruses if I'm not mistaken. ARM based architecture is just easier it seems.

Well said XYZ! Arm being a RISC based processor inherently by its design in each iteration has better power/performance per lithagraphy (i.e. 22nm/etc) than a RISC based cpu (Intel/AMD in our PC's/Laptops/ultrabooks).

Funny nobody seemed to realize this when apple used RISC based cpu's in the "Power" lineup of desktops/laptops when the partnership between Apple/Motorola/IBM back in the days. Its just so much easier to code for (Xbox & XBox360 as well). RISC is the future ... unless Intel and x86-64 can get something right ... and they usually do .. its only matter of how to apply Moore's Law to the design principle and manufacturing.

You guys heard anything other than this news of a 7" Xperia tablet? Maybe they've wisened up and realized 7" is just a form factor and doesn't necessarily mean low end. Apple had since swallowed its pride and came up with iPad Mini, perhaps Sony is re-thinking its decision with this development?

Has anyone learned that Sony might introduce light field camera and Super resolution zoom technology to future devices?
