P990 vs HTC TyTn |

Played with the Voda TyTN yesterday evening and here is my detailed feedback:
Like with the Universal there many buttons everywhere and not all can be used in all configurations:
-For example in portrait mode the wheel is great and it has a nice feel (but prefer the P990s's wheel), but in landscape mode the wheel is not well placed to be useful
- the slide out keyboard mechanism feels well made and strong but I did manage to push open one side up slightly higher then the other side so there is some 'play' in the design, I am sure one would get used to opening this more smoothly over time. But when using the TyTN in portrait mode occasionally I feel the keyboard slider just move a little so the device did not feel so 'solid' in your hand
- unfortunately the 'Delete' key and one of the soft keys on the keyboard are not very responsive so I'll be returning the unit for replacement (actually the 'delete/back' does not always work). I found the soft menu buttons difficult to select with my medium sized fingers because of their placement so close to the bottom of the top-half of the slide-out screen section, again I suspect with practice it may not be a problem
- I don't like the fat short stylus and I know its new but it kept getting stuck in the silo
- I really hate the WM5 user interface as it reminds me of my 1999 LG Phenom Win CE 2.11 machine. Why have Microsoft kept this old fashioned look fo so long?
- the settings for connectivity (wifi, 3G, etc) are not that easy to set-up for people not familiar with WM5
On the positive side:
- WM5 is implemented well on the TyTN and Pocket IE works well but is no quicker for the web sites I use than the P990 with Opera. The P990's better screen technology means its better for looking at pictures/graphics/video.
- switching between apps is very quick as is the initial start-up
- there is lots of RAM, about 30MB (or more) from start-up
- I only needed to reset it once during the day when it froze
The TyTN because of WM5 feels a more stable and reliable work horse at the moment. If you want a mini tablet device where the web app is what you use a lot in preference to makeing calls I think the TyTN may meet your needs better atthe moment than the P990. But from a design and fashion/style perspective (which is obviously very subjective) the P990 is ahead, which is not surprising as it includes that special Sony 'magic' that Sony manage to include in all their products (some call it the 'wow' factor). I would say overall SE have a lot of work to do to get the OS as stable and slick as WM5 now appears to be on the TyTN.
Things I'll check today before I send it back for a replacement:
- making phone calls (!)
- quality of music reproduction

Vodafone have pushed back the date now for the p990i to September or maybe later so i have just gone for the Vodafone v1605.
My upgrade was due last year back in august so there is no chance i am waiting now.
I'll be picking it up today.

A few more thoughts on the TyTN:
- with an improved quality screen I don't see why someone would want to buy a HTC Universal (the only other 3G/wifi HTC handset)
- battery life seems good but still don't like the way PowerSave works - you need to press the 'on' button before you can make a call
- call quality much improved over the HTC Universal, nearly on par with Nokia and SE 3G handsets
- I really don't like the basic WM5 user interface a the strange system sounds (will hunt around to see if I can easily reduce the volume and change to sound used without having to resort to reg hacking)
- had a few instances where the screen did not respond to my selections, felt like I was using a very thick screen protector (is this the screen alignment fault?)
If you buy a TyTN you wont be unhappy as it is quality product and when the price gets closer to UKP430 SIM free it will be good value as well...but the poor screen quality stills annoys me, if that were bettert....

what I am doing is duplicating my effort on both.
I have both downloading emails regularly and so I am checking them on both to see ease of handling.
I'm alternating calls from both
on the train to/from work I am browsing Esato on both, and also other sites.
I'm watching videos and listening to music on both
etc etc.
I'm fairly sure I know my preference but its too early to commit 100% as I really do want to go through a weekend at least as my use changes compared to during the week

So far this has all been very informative. I sadly feel I might have to spend the cash and get 1 of each, and then decide the right one for me.
I am grateful for all your input on all fronts, and it is clear that both devices are very good and both have their issues. Never found WM5 to be a problem on the K-Jam, just felt the device had an underpowered processor. I never had the chance to upgrade to AKU2 to see what difference it made etc. Never had a Symbian device, always put off by how slow the smart phones were.
I think the TyTn has an edge for me due to the slight future proofing with HSDPA and WiFi G, but I do like SE stuff.
I will advise once I have had a play of both.

@masseur,
Please keep us informed on how you get on using both devices concurrently.
I should have my Vodafone 1605 tonight or first thing tommorow, but i cant compare it to the p990i as i dont or know anyone who has one.

After reading everything i could find on the net about the P990i i have found myself doing the one thing i thought i never would and started to research the TyTN. And to my complete surprise, I think I have decided on getting it over the 990.
reason: the Keyboard, and the vast array of 3rd party apps.
when i thought about not using PocketBreeze and PocketInformant - i started to think how i would cope.
I appreciate all the user posts on their experiences of these two phones. |

Clove is a good bet. They are the cheapest SIM free too, and Jah posted a 5% discount code for them a little while back too.
I see there is a few of us now having either bought os decided to buy both devices and it is fascinating seeing different peoples repsonses to both devices.
@Jah - it seems like you are leaning towards the P990i over the TyTN?
I'll tell you this though - and here is an interesting idea - what if the TyTN was actually made by SE in a P990i style case, with the SE quality camera, and decent screen. They would have an absolute stormer of a product which would probably mange to take a huge chunk out of HTC's market share. I know I'd buy one. |

Is the Tytn the same thickness as the p990 with its flip off or is it thicker?
