True. And markets like India and China and other developing markets have a huge demand for entry level smartphones. Not everyone can afford a high end smartphone.

I think thats' wrong! SGS2 is the best selling Android by a wide margin. Check this chart:

yah.. exactly. iphone outsells any other phone. even subsidized in the US, it's still a very expensive phone. Costs almost as much as my imported, unlocked x10 when i got it!

If sony focused its efforts on midrange and high end phones and produced absolutely jaw dropping designs filled with the latest tech and gorgeous UI and software features that sony is known for, it could easily make up for whatever they make with low end devices. It's the mid and high end phones that give it brand power and brand power is what it needs to increase market share and as a result, revenue.

Not really, IOS smartphones/tablets themselves are just a fraction of total Android Smartphones today, even though it was iPhone alone that's responsible for putting platform on its current rank, Still we can't ignore the fact that the ever important low-mid end phones have made Android the current most popular mobile platform, just imagine if all Android manufacturers ditch the entry level sector and concentrate on High ends alone, I'm pretty sure that despite their better device offerings, Android might not overshadow IOS as it is doing right now

EDIT: I think we're quite missing the topic subject now, I wonder if Sony would introduce a counter to the new 16MP OmniVision sensor, the one used on S006/S007 is old now and might not be used on new phones anymore. I don't think anyone wouldn't like 10FPS burst shooting on a smartphone just as it was on Cybershot T-series digicams

Here's what I am not sure on. Do these Nexus devices have any software upgrades by the manufacturers? Or are they just differences in hardware?

The whole point is for a 'Vanilla' android experience, but then I imagine that means losing a lot of individuality and software tweaks. In SE's case, take Mobile Bravia, xLoud, timescape etc. Is it possible to incorporate such features and still create Vanilla android? Or will this just be a battle of the hardware specs?

The original point of the Nexus (and certain other Android devices) was to serve as a reference platforms primarily so that developers would know what kind of hardware specifications Google was targeting; unfortunately, since low-end devices haven't been keeping pace, I think having multiple Nexus devices would be an opportunity for Google to have a reference device targeted for each market segment to signal to OEMs, developers, and customers what their expectations should be in different market segments. Enthausiasts would probably disagree with me on this, but this would not only prevent the Nexus line from being a useless battle of specifications, but it could help improve the general Android ecosystem.

According to some speculations on softpedia, Sony won't be one of the 5 OEMs to produce a Nexus device, the 5 were ZTE, LG, Motorola(now Google), Samsung and HTC, they'll be announced on November 5.

Although I honestly wished Sony would be one of them. the vanilla androids needed better camera and I doubt we'll see that on other OEMs,

i think that is just pure speculation there though! so sony may still be in it!

infact if google is going for hardware diversity by release 5 different nexus devices...then sony would be an obvious choice...they are one of the few manufacturers that actually make their devices different (mini, mini pro, ray, pro) and stand out beyond just more powerful processors
