this is not by any means an official answer *quick disclaimer*

the one big reason i think they stuck with duos with the w850 is because all phones out there right now use duos - and users are more likely to have purchased gigabyte-sized cards for music, and must have forseen that current users will be pissed off that after investing a gazillion bucks on gigabyte cards, they wouldnt be able to use it on the new walkmans. makes sense, eh?

the more "official" explanation is that, as per mobile-review, the w850 has been long in development, and that it's even using an the "older platform" (whatever that is) of the w800 and the w900

I don't think SE gives a rat's a$$ what people have invested. They want everyone to buy new cards so that they can make more money. The explanation that it's been longer in dev makes more sense to me. IMO they WILL change over to the M2 on future Walkman phones, because that's the direction they have taken.

Tervel: without doubt, the next walkmans will have M2. i'd still like to think that realizes M2 is too new a technology to meet the demands of space-hungry walkman owners. hence, the reason for sticking with MSDP. if they did otherwise I wouldve been greatly greatly pissed off. i just got meself a 2GB card, then the next day they come out with M2

why do I have the feeling that a new card format will be out long before M2 reaches its full potential? those money-making companies are joking us.

w850 uses the same platform as k800 and i dont think k800 has the old platform...so w850 doesnt have an old platform..cuz k800 and w850 use the same themes...they have same screen size...and the rest of the software is exactly the same other then the walkman player which is version 2.0 in w850

I dont intend to be mean, but, uh, the almost-3-year-old K700 shares the same screen size as the month-old K610. And you can use the same themes for everything that has a screen size of 176x220, give and take a few theme elements. W900 also has a screen res. of 320x480, so that's not exactly a very accurate representation of what is the "old platform" or otherwise. I believe the basis for Eldar using these rather confusing "platforms" is the card type implemented in the phone. My theory on why this is so makes the most sense for me, thank you

I have a K790i and the volume is way too low *sometimes*:

When making phone calls, I have trouble hearing the other person even when the volume is set to the loudest setting. This happens when in normal mode and when in speaker phone mode.

Yet, when my alarm clock goes off, it is extremely loud on the loudest setting.

Similarly, when I play the sample music using the included headphones, the sound volume is more than adaquate even at lower-than-maximum settings.

My conclusion therefore is that the phone must be misinterpreting the volume levels for phone calls--it does not seem to be a hardware limitation. This seems like something that could be fixed with a firmware update.

Or, perhaps the problem is that I am using the chinese firmware (R1CC003) in the USA (on Cingular Blue)?

My friends have also told me that when I have the "preferred service" set to "PS and CS," I sound like there is some noise in the background. But, when I have it set to "PS only," the noise goes away. I don't really even know what this setting does, but when I have it set to "PS only," the EDGE icon goes away.

ok i was wrong...but Eldar states in his review of k800:
"The usage of new platform, different screen type, increased specifications were supposed to increase phone’s energy consumption."
Link: http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-wilma-2-en.shtml
(fourth last paragraph..first line)

so if we beleive w850 uses the same platform as k800 then ur theory of w850 usin an old platform is wrong..and we bevlieve that w850 uses the same NEW platform as k800 cuz Eldar writes in his review of w850:
"The model precisely copies Sony Ericsson K800i, featuring slightly altered feature set, different camera and integrated Walkman 2.0 media player. One and the same core functionality means that the model will reside in the same high price bracket..."
Link: it can b found in the reviews section @ www.mobile-review.com..srry i have it saved so i dont have the exact link. Second paragraph

if they have the same core(in other words same platform), then SE could've easily incorporated a M2 slot but for some other reason they chose not to.
Why they chose not to? Eldar goes on about it in his (w850's) review. and of course he says something about "applying different memory types to different platforms." but i dont think he means that w850 is usin an older platform.

SE are not introducing M2 sticks to make money for God's sake. It costs them millions to develop and produce new memory formats. The reason they introduce ever smaller memory sticks is to fit ever more hardware in a shrinking platform. Look how big the K800 is, it's huge, imagine if they had to make room for a MSDP card? Imagine the difficulty SE have in squeezing everything into such small form factors. Infact Motorola and Nokia have been using micro memory cards way before SE, so if anything, SE are holding out for the customer's sake as long as they can before they absolutely have to reduce the size of the memory stick.

Do you think the sticks would be so expensive if SE could still make money (lot's more) by selling them even 25% cheaper? Manufacturer's keep accessory prices high to recover costs, not to make money. The real price of a single M2 stick (if you count the development cost) is probably thousands of dollars. SE won't even start recouping the cost of M2 development until the product has been in the market for a year or more. By then, the price will come down to more reasonable limits.

The profit in their main market, ie: mobile phones, subsidises development in the accessory market. Do you think they made any money from the Car-100 for example? Of course not.

They reduce the size of all components in the handset out of shear necessity, the memory expansion is no exception.

Ah well my time is up and Im going to buy a K800. Normally I get quite excited around this time but to be honest this year Ive even been pondering just keeping my phone until something better comes out.

When I got my W800, I imagined that a year later there would be another phone with a better camera and probably better music. I loved the W800 styling and was looking forward to more of the same. I've always enjoyed the convenience of having a camera in my phone, so all the new W models are now out of the picture for me. I still can't understand why the K800 which is a camera specific phone has such an awful screen cover? It kinda reminds me of a tourist with one of those annoying backpacks. Surely the W800 had it right? Ah well back to the black brick I go. If only Nokia had produced a phone which outperformed the K800 I would have returned to them this time around.

jakemaster,

I think you will love the upgrade from the w800, a lot of people said there is not a "wow" factor with the k800. IMO it feels like a huge upgrade from my w800. After waiting for a while to buy the K800 and reading all the posts, I don't understand why so many posts were negitive about this phone. Everyday I use this phone the more I like it, there are so many new feachers and the older things work much better. It has been well worth the money. I can finially take pictures of my friends at the bar or club.

On the down side:
The w800 keypad is easier to use.
Also keep your old earphones
no mega bass but I have adjusted the equalizer for extra bass on the k800 which is almost as good.
