They could just borrow one from their compact camera range. If I'm not mistaken the original sensor in the Z1 done just that.

Nope. The Sony Xperia Z1 uses a mobile Exmor RS sensor (IMX220) |

I don't recall the imx220 being formally announced though.
Sithatly, I don't remember a formal announcement for the imx240 either.
Same thing could happen for a theoretical imx250 that Sony intend to use....
Who knows. This is just speculation. |
