It is good seeing them come back to being Sony of old.

Forget Nexus, I'm sure there will be a Google Play Edition Sony Z2, just like the Sony Z Ultra GPE, would be crazy for Sony and Google not to make a Z2 GPE.

Google Editon phones are crap compared to original ones.
Especially in the camera but otherwise too.

I cant wait for the Z2 vs gs5 camera shootout as we know the 20.7mp camera beats all 13mp smartphones but the GS5 with a slightly larger sensor than the GS4 and an extra 3mp on top I still think the Z1, Z1c and the Z2 all running Kitkat with new algorithms will still be the top droid camera phone.
Can anyone also confirm that the Z2 has a 15.5mp @ 16:9 in manual mode aswell

Not quite sure where you come in here, but the person I was responding to, Caspa, clearly wants a Sony with the Nexus Experience, the closest to that, currently, is Google Play Edition. Whether or not you like the GPE devices is your opinion.

UI is less usable and aesthetic.
I really feel Sony's attempt is actually better than native, clean Android UI.
Some vanilla Android places are less pleasing, like dialer, contacts etc.
Things like themes are not part of pure Android either (AFAIK).

If the gpe is the exact same device.. Can we just unlock the bootloader and install the gpe rom ?
