There are no leftover Z panels. That makes no sense, thats not how modern supply chains work. Storing millions of panels is a lot of wasted money

Now Sony may have ordered the same type of panels that were used on the Z. But nobody is storing leftover panels

I dont think there will be a real answer to this. When Z first came out, the argument was that the JDI display was crap and the Sharp panel was the best one, but then XDA did a survey and it turned out both panels were good and bad

Only way to be sure is to try out your unit in the store first.

I think the Ultra have better viewing angles because of OptiContrast, thats not included on Z1....if Im not mistaken.

it is a feature of the Z1.. http://www.sonymobile.com/au/[....]es/xperia-z1/features/#display

All other manufacturers use this feature too but they don't call it with specialname like Sony does, OptiContrast.

That's not always possible. I went to my local Phones4u store yesterday, in which I was seriously considering buying the Z1. When I asked the Assistant if I could inspect the unit before parting with my cash, she told me they are not allowed to open the packaging as once been opened they are unable to resell it.

This is a funny walkthrough.. I'm not sure who the guy is answering the questions but he COMPLETELY disregards the viewing angle question (around 3:20ish). If he is a Sony employee, that's pretty bad. They should OWN up to it on the Z and show that is has improved on the Z1 or something. To ignore it and say that there are no viewing angle problem is a bit absurd. Even worse is to say it's exactly what you want on a smartphone.. tsk tsk whoever that guy is..

i don't even care about viewing angles, but plenty of people do. to answer a question like that just makes it very suspicious.. i really hope that guy is not speaking for Sony..

@monkeypantz - yes.

@king-james - OptiContrast is indeed Sony's brand. It works by using a special resin in the glass panel to eliminate glare and increase contrast & color. They've combined it with sensor-on-lens tech, which eliminates the space between the touch sensor layer and the glass. Surely, as a self proclaimed Sony lover, you don't make such conclusive statements without providing some evidence? Where does samsung do it? where does Apple, HTC, LG, do it? I don't care if they don't have a brand name for it, but how do you know they do the same thing?

I am wondering.

Has Sony it's own factories in China or are they outsourcing to foxconn?

With Foxconn busy on the iphone models, could it then impact Sony and we get less quality and consistency on the Sony factory process?

This may be where Fujitsu flagship will have an edge, the screens are produced by their JV with Toshiba in Japan and the assembly is in Japan. I am not naive on their "made in Japan" branding, snapgragon 800 is built in Taiwan I think, but this mean that overall they may have a better control in particular if Sony outources and has to fight with apple for ressources at the same time.

I think the Z1 is a fine piece of hardware. I am worried about docomo updates release speed though.
The fujitsu rumor is also tempting with 5.2" screen, 64gb, fingerprint reader, waterproof and full seg TV. The speaker on the current fujitsu does not seem impressive. I will wait for it and compare with z1 before buying.

moogoo here for you the definition of OptiContrast. It has nothing to do with contrast and colours...

@king-james.. that's not the full picture my friend..

"OptiContrast™ Panel technology boosts the contrast and brightness. By boosting contrast and brightness, the viewing experience is enhanced."

Source

and

"OptiContrast Panels have a special resin layer which absorbs any diffused light delivered from the backlight. What you see is high contrast and natural colours on screen – bringing out detail in the darkest movie scenes – and a real sense of depth.

This special resin layer inside OptiContrast Panels also absorbs ambient light in the room. When watching TV, it reduces glare from light sources such as lamps or sunlight"

@king-james .. i'm sure there is marketing involved, no doubt. But it does help! I've compared the opticontrast screen with a galaxy S3/S4 screen (with both screens off) and you can definitely notice more glare on the S3/S4.

and yes.. that dude is clueless.

Sony also have this clearblack layer when display is off. You can't see where/how big the screen is. Looks like a complete black layer. I love that!

I just want that Sony will use in future gorilla glass and forget this stupid foil...

@bonovox
I prefer Z display instead S4 display for example. Colours on the Z are much better! My bro using a S4, the screen looks horrible for me...

@king-james i love the black screen effect too. it's a small thing, but makes a world of difference in how it looks.

There is no official word as to which one Sony uses, but it's speculated that Sony actually uses BOTH Gorilla Glass and Dragontrail as suppliers for the glass. If this is true, then it would be understandable that they do not advertise what type it is, since they use both.

this is the official word from Sony in regards to the glass on the Xperia Z (note, not the Z1):

From Twitter: "we don’t comment on supplier names but Xperia Z uses durable tempered glass that has equiv specs to Gorilla/Dragontrail ^SM
10:21 PM - 10 Jan 2013"

Thus, it's very likely that they use the same on the Z1. AFAIK, Neither Gorilla Glass OR Dragontrail are SHATTER proof.. which is what the plastic ANTI-SHATTER sheet is there to protect. If you look at the Gorilla Glass website and Dragontrail website, neither of them will advertise that they are shatterproof. ONLY that they have very high scratch resistance.

That is why Sony puts the anti-shatter sheet on there. It's up to you if you want to remove it. I do agree with others that printing the Sony logo on the sheet instead of the glass is a bad move considering some people DO remove the sheet.

I know this story about Z glass, too good... But it's never gorilla glass, believe me.
I had so many different phones, you feel it so easy. But let's stop now with glass discussion.

I just read GSMArena's review of the Z1 and saw their camera comparisons charts..

It should suffice to say that even the Lumia 925 did significantly better compared to 8MP auto mode and of course to the poor 20MP manual mode!

But all in all, the phone seems a good hit.

Sony did really bad with the Z's display but they are learning fast from their mistakes these days.
The Z Ultra and Z1 are some excellent overall smartphones.

If one doesn't care for the Stylus on the Note and its multitasking abilities and just looking for a phablet with high-end specs, I would certainly recommend the Z Ultra over it..

As to the Z1, it somehow disappoints as the camera was supposed to be a key point but turned up a flop, and too much bezel on the thing too..
Compared to the G2 and the GSIV it's a tough call but can't say it has any major advantage..
Recommendation would still go for the GSIV..
