To all...

I don't get draw into tit-for-tat and other crap. This is why when I state something I try my best to substantiate this with hard facts. So, since I've been so kind to show and tell... why don't some of you other Monkey Bruthas do the same - show me the money... or is that facts?

MTN Group Ltd, the second largest mobile operator in South Africa, has further expanded its African reach after acquiring GSM networks from two mobile operators in Cote d'Ivoire and Zambia.

The South Africa-based operator already has operations in Nigeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda and Swaziland. MTN has been keen to push into developing African markets, as the South African mobile market is now regarded as mature, and its very high mobile penetration rates offers very little growth opportunities.

MTN has now made agreements to buy a 51% stake in Ivory Coast's Loteny Telecom, which trades as Telecel Cote d'Ivoire, and a 100% stake in Zambia's Telecel Zambia. The operator gave no financial details, although the deal should increase MTN's total subscriber base to over 16 million.

Telecel Cote d'Ivoire has a market share of 46% and over 800,000 subscribers. The transaction was cleared by regulatory authorities but is subject to some minor conditions. Cote d'Ivoire is one of two operators in the West African nation.

"The country boasts one of the largest ports in sub-Saharan Africa and an outstanding infrastructure with a network of over 16,000km of paved roads, making the Ivory Coast an attractive investment opportunity for us," said Yvonne Muthien, group executive for corporate affairs at MTN.

She says the country has recorded one of the highest growth rates for GSM services in Africa over the last five years and growth potential still remains high, given the current mobile penetration rate of approximately 11%.

A Y'ello solution for the new cellphone virus!

MTN has implemented an enhanced software application to block the new cellphone virus called CommWarrior, as well as any future viruses. In partnership with WhiteCell Inc., the messaging software provider, MTN is now able to block the virus message generation thus protecting its subscribers with Bluetooth enabled phones from the virus. For the first time in South Africa, MTN has an anti-virus blocking software solution that demonstrates its innovation and its commitment to excellent customer service delivery. This anti-virus blocking software is called MMSafe, and has been operational in MTN since Monday 13 June 2005, and has proven successful in blocking 100% of messages generated from infected handsets on the MTN network.

The notorious MMS virus, CommWarrior virus only spreads itself via Bluetooth. It cannot be transmitted or propagated via MMS on the MTN network, as the Comverse Multimedia Messaging Service Centre (MMSC) implemented within MTN's network strips out the virus part of a MMS message.

The virus only affects Symbian based cellphones, and especially the Series 60 user interface cellphones. The virus, once transmitted to a cellphone, generates MMS messages to random numbers on the subscriber's cellphone with one of the following subjects:

3DGame, 3DNow!, Audio driver, CheckDisk, Desktop, manager, Display driver, Dr. Web, Free SEX!, Happy Birthday!, Internet Accelerator, Internet Cracker, Matrix Remover, MS-DOS, Nokia ringtoner, Norton Antivirus, PocketPCemu, Porno images, PowerSave Inspector, Security update #12, Symbian security update, SymbianOS update, Virtual SEX, WWW Cracker or any other random generated subject.
If a MTN subscriber receives such an MMS, the subscriber's handset is not infected, and cannot be infected by the message, as MTN's MMSC strips out the virus infected attachment. The sender of the message is the one infected by the virus. MTN customers can thus use the enhanced functionality of MMS without fear, and continue to send them.

Previously, before the MTN anti-virus blocker software installation, a subscriber was charged for the MMS messages generated by the virus, and had to contact the MTN call centre to be refunded for messages sent. With the new virus blocking software implemented, 100% of the virus generated messages are blocked before they can be charged to the subscriber. In other words no bogus virus-generated messages will be charged to the subscriber.

Although the anti-virus blocking software does not stop the spread of the virus via Bluetooth, it protects the subscriber from the impact of the virus. Bluetooth interacts directly with a subscriber's handset and is thus independent of the network, thus MTN is unable to limit the spread of viruses through Bluetooth. MTN subscribers infected with the CommWarrior virus still need to get a handset software update from their service provider, or download an anti-virus application to their cellphone. The subscribers will charged for the software upgrades if their cellphone is out of warranty.

"The best way of protecting yourself from the virus is to switch off the Bluetooth connection and hide one's visibility to all Bluetooth enabled phones. If a subscriber receives a request to install a file or a message sent via Bluetooth, the subscriber must not choose to install the file or accept the message. This MMS Anti-virus blocking solution will protect our subscribers by protecting them from the effects of the virus, while they can keep on enjoying the benefits of MMS, without the fear of their handset being infected by receiving an MMS message." said Ashraff Paruk, General Manager: Products and Innovation, MTN SA.

@Bongzino: Nice name, welcome to the SA thread. It's called the T28 cable, don't know if you'll find it in SA but you can always try eBay if you've got a credit card. BTW hope you're not hating on Shady/Aftermath.

Hello. Umm.. MTN doesn't have 16mil subscribers. Internationally if a company owns like MTN 51% in a company with 800 000 subscribers, then MTN only counts the 51% part of the 800 000 which is 392 000. Huge difference. Just stating this because Vodafone only counts its percentage owned it each company, dus why it is 2nd in total subscribers worldwide.

ICASA musn't take away the free mobiles with the contracts, this means NO ONE WILL BUY A NEW MOBILE! Then everybody is just going to use the mobile they're now using forever. I promise you that. THey will only get a new mobile if they have to. Most people(98%) can't even afford a mobile at R2000+. This means the mobile prices will jump and we the people looking for advanced mobiles will suffer. Stupid ikaka!

The future's doesn't seems bright.

With all the hatred directed at the Yello guys I'd like to see them spring a suprise. @Tahir: How come you've already got their tariffs if they're only launching on Sunday?
