Yes, I'm a bit disappointed with this. 1. because you can't start the camera without using the camera button or menu (and presumably have to unlock the keypad in order to start the camera). Not good. I've loved the active lense covers of K750/K800, for ease of access to the camera.
and 2. because the lens protector is not recessed it will be subject to smudges AND scratches (aka W810)

Hmm the TRUE Active Lens cover of the K750 was THE BEST! Why? Didn't matter WHAT Java app you ran you slide it up and its picture time  . However this is not the same with my K790a  . But I can live with it. Seems that on the K850i, you can goto menu , but it may be quicker to press the camera power button bingo pic time. Thats the way i'm seeing it.
W810 I had it for almost 9mths give or take a day - before I sold it - and NEVER EVER scratched the lens, NOR did that purple hue peel or wear off. I don't use cases for my phones, I put them in my jeans, or pants(Chino) pockets, sometimes with note cards or loose change. this is DAILY. I don't have fear with this K850i but I will NOT put it in my change pocket though lol may have a felt little sling for it though. something like a Ghoola.

Man you are lucky dude! I had a W810 back cover on my K750, I had the phone cased at all times, but the case had a whole for the camera lense (not a clear screen - they block out light). But I wore it on my belt. I also never had problems, but then I didn't carry it in my pocket! 
I think later release W810 they used stronger "glass" (polycarbonate)
But my main concern with K850, the camera button will be a quick way to camera, but only when the keypad is unlocked (presumably). So one still has to unlock the keypad to use camera.

i think i read somewhere if you press and hold cam button, it will activate the cam even if the keypad is locked. |

Same here! Lets hope that modding will begin shortly after K850i is released.
My ONLY perturbed regret is ..... the calendar was not advanced to a scheduling function. Everything else got upgraded but this.

Yes, scheduling would be handy for some, but not so critical for me. However I agree it should be included.
You can't manage it from the phone itself, however, if you sync with outlook, which is a very useful thing, then scheduled appointments are sent to the phone.
I'm not a huge fan of outlook, but it's just too useful to have all contacts, tasks and calendar entries synced to the phone seemlessly and at the click of a button. And via bluetooth even . Just a shame Thunderbird doesn't incorporate tasks and calendar, then we'd have syncing of organiser data via MyPhoneExplorer. Then I could drop the resource hog that is Outlook. It doesn't crash all the time anymore (like it did years ago), but it achieves that by being the slowest mail client under the sun, and by bringing the rest of your system to it's knees.

on most (all?)  phones to date, users have not been able to activate the cam app by holding the shutter button when the keypad is locked. ill be surprised to see this changed in the k850i. lets wait and see....

oooops forgot the on/off button on the k850i  i was talking about phones in general, which of course none have had this button....
the on/off button 'should' be fully functional when the keypad is locked.

That's because all flagship k series (K750/K800) to date have active shutter cover. So it wasn't necessary to hold button down while locked. K850 is first K series flagship not to include active shutter.
So in regard to camera on/off button, is this another button in addition to the camera shutter release?
