Given the fact that the m600 is out there's no point checking the os progress anymore - its finished ;)
etaab:
The hw may very well have been ready for release a year ago, but without a working os its nothing more but a very expensive but useless piece of technology :) The fact that uiq3 only got finished a few months ago explains the delay of the phone, and SE had nothing to do with that. And the extra features explain the delay between the m600 and the p990.
All in all I think it won't be long now.
Personally I think its very well worth the wait, for me this phone will simply be perfect

Just thought you would like to know tha I spoke to a person at sony ericsson about the M600i and P990i release dates....they confirmed that the M600i is going to be shipping in the UK this week coming or the one after. I then asked about the P990i and the person started to mumble and then say, we are having problems with it at the moment and it is going to be delayed to July now. So June now looks def out of the question, first time i heard SE saying that its coming out in July.....how frustrating... |

libben what more would a p1000 know?
the only two things that come to my mind are gps and wimax, but I doubt they'd put these in there :)

Hmm. Having crossed over to the dark side (i.e. I could wait no more and bought a Nokia N80) I must admit it's strange... I still don't know what P990i loveliness I am missing out on, as the bugger is not available yet.
The N80 is extremely complicated, software-wise, and is a bit of a rush-job. Nokia really aren't very good at making sliders, the main gripe with the N80 is that keypad... very hard, no grip below the keys, and it's badly balanced for text input, something SE got spot on with the S700i I used to use...
For all the fanboys... be glad SE are taking time to sort out the P990i, you don't want it to come out with flakey software.
The screen on the N80 is far too small for its resolution as well... but that Webcore browser is a peach. Shame about Series60 itself... |

I just have to agree. Symbian is much better than WM05 |

I've got phones with both OS & I have to agree Symbian is the better of the two, roll on the release of the P990 so I can sell my SPV M5000

ok this may seem a little stupid but i've nearly really used a pda phone before. What is all the hype about exactly? Why should someone choose the new p990i over the k800 for example? As far as i can tell the only advantage is things like windows software and better internet browsing. is there more to it? I'm gonna have my upgrade around september and you never know the p990i may be out by then |

Before my p910 i had a k700, here are the reasons why I changed:
-native sw available - native software can be much faster and consumes far less battery than the java sw would
-touchscreen (couldn't ever live without again :)
-replaced all of the gadgets i was carrying around (pda, mp3player, phone)
-size is within my idea of reasonable (as opposed to most pdas)
my main reasons for changing to the p990 will be the wifi support, the new camera, the new keyboard position and all the various tweaks they did which i missed after the k700 (automatic sms delivery report sending and handling, photo light, auto capitalization for text input, such small things)
hope this anwsers your question :)

Hi, comparing with normal phones (K or W series for example), the the current P series have more than 1000 3rd party softwares and games that can be installed onto the phone to make our lives more productive and enhances its usefulness. E.g., I may not like the built-in audio and video media players, contact appclication and calendar application. Hence I can purchase and install 3rd party software with added features and functionalities that the default ones lacks. The possibilities are limitless, as long as developers are willing to commit and comes out with creative and useful softwares. Rest assured the same will apply for UIQ 3 (P990i, M600i and W950) in due time.
Also, P series comes with Hand Writing Recognition plus a screen size of around 2.8" which normal phones lacks too. |

Unfortunalely that 2.8in screen can only be included in a cell the size of a brick :s I still have to see a cell with a screen quality close to the N80's. Also is difficult to write even a short sms answer on a screen with the stylus while driving :-( . On a one hand operated S60 cell one can do that with a bit of practice without even taking it out of one's poked ! Human interface was the biggest drawback PDA's never caught up big time. The s60 outnumber the other symbian models by 10:1 and even more if the s80 isn't taken into consideration. Btw - this very post has been typed while driving on night patrol - such is the versatility of the s60. Is by far not the best os - but certainly usefull in real life.

Do you guys mind if we jump off topic once again?
I've been looking at the various pre-paid options online, but don't quite understand how things are done in Europe. In the U.S. you would just buy a sim and a refill card that comes in various increments of minutes and talk until the minutes run out then buy a new refill card. Say 1000 minutes for $50(£25) and talk until the minutes are gone.
I am assuming a 2:1 exchange rate for simplicity 2USD=1GBP.
With my current monthly pay plan from T-Mobile, I get 1000 minutes w/free nights and weekends, and 1000 text for $56 (£28). However, any call I make/recieve will cost $1(50p) so my included minutes really don't matter. Text messages would be $0.35 (18p) each way.
It is going to be cheaper for anyone in the States to call me than for me to call them, but I still want a reasonably priced option to not only call the States but to also make calls while in London and when I travel. I understand the whole buying a new SIM in each country, but what carrier should I go with if I do so? Any other suggestions?
