I don't think that the NT kernel would allow for a 100% port of the Phase 1 system, but I am sure they will have some variation of it at MWC.
Maybe they could use one of those SoCs: http://www.anandtech.com/show[....]t-400-krait-300-snapdragon-800
..but I am still not convinced that they can handle the sensor and the required oversampling, especially in video mode.. 1 billion pixels/sec
I really don't care, the 808 is an awesome smartphone.. I really don't miss anything, so.. I am good until something that can fully replace it comes along. |

Excellent DoF with the shots here, this phone is perfect for macro/portrait imaging, if Nokia would plan to integrate this sensor on their new WP device they need much larger aperture and more manual controls for that and the shutter.

Actually I don't think its good for portraits or macro... the sensor is not big enough to really blur the background for proper portrait photography, and on the macro side you can get close enough to the subject.
The 808 shines in landscape photography...
here is some xenon power there are many stand alone cameras that can't pull that kind of clarity and white balance when shooting in the dark..

If you look closely you can see the algorithm work... and it misses here and there and you can see some artifacts, but overall, yes.. its amazing considering the size of the whole thing. To get that kind of performance you will need a much bigger machine
Here is another one, its a little better here I think

Well there never will be perfect technology, but the 808 comes as close as ive ever seen before.
Not even my N8 can come as close to that and it takes brilliant images.

It's very good image quality, but I believe this quality will be available on more phones as technology advances. Who would have thought a few years ago that we would get such pictures from a cameraphone ?

The N8 is great.. I still have mine as well.. it has a tad better DR (at times) but other than that, I agree with you, the 808 is better overall.
Rumor has it that the new Lumia will be better than the 808 in every way.. I doubt that improvements will be substantial, if any, but we will see.

The problem is that phase 1 is surrounded by a ring of 50 patents, most of which are owned by Nokia and some by Toshiba, so the chances of this particular tech trickling down to other OEMs is slim to none. They might try to copy it, but it will be very hard to go around the patents.
Improving image quality (with the current tech) is a tricky business.. it gets exponentially harder, its kind of like Formula 1 You can get within 0.500/second of the leading car, but to get within .100 is much, much harder. So getting to that "perfect pixel" gets very hard the closer you get.
I would say that the 808 system is about 2 seconds a lap quicker at the moment, and even if the rest get to within half a second, it will be extremely difficult to match, and even harder to surpass.
If that happens, it will come from a completely different kind of technology, different kind of image sensor.. or maybe a breakthrough in BSI.. I don't know.
here is a good example of why I think the sensor/optics in the 808 is not perfect for portraits, its not big enough to blur the background properly from a distance, so you kind of get a wanna be effect lol
