@Osmano

my mistake, you can charge while the P990 is connected. But as I and Avantis have advised, just wait a few hours and have a fully charged battery before you start.

No im not kidding, some of you are saying double the speed..lightning fast etc etc but the speed is all objective. Yes the video trick does speed the menu's up somewhat, definite improvement ill admit but not that super fast as some claim the menus have become .
The thing is every time you turn the phone on and off, you then have to do teh video trick dont you?? or is it now saved in the phone so that the menus are always fast??.

Thats not the point... the thing is that we se that the phone has potential to be really fast. And that in comming FW-updates we might se an improvment of menyspeed since the phone apperently can handle it!

The Q is, as I said.. does this affect battery life alot??

I supposeone could leave the application open in the background (taking care not to overload the phone with other applications..) whilst operating the phone as normally, and see if that has any effect on battery life..

@spawn, it may be not double speed, but i assure you its not "slightly" faster...only you said that...the change is dramatic, and that is why there is all this attention regarding this trick

but i also would like to know the effects on batt life

@masseur

You are right. The phone can not hold all the major applications running together at the same time..They will need to address this very quickly..

Well i just did it again but used the instructions from my symbian and i have to admit i was wrong earlier...there is a big difference in menu speeds once you playback a video and leave it running. Mistake i made was shutting it down so really couldnt see the difference.
But yes the menus are much more snappier and repsonsive than they were before.

Battery life for me is about a day but then thats with a few calls, a bit of browsing and bluetooth on all day so i guess it hits the battery pretty hard. Doesnt really bother me much as i tned to charge my phone overnight most of the time. Even my k800i had a pretty terrible battery life but was better once you switched off the 3g access.
I really dont understand why SE gave such terrible capacity batteries for these phones namely the k800i and p990i. Theres no way you can get 300 odd hrs of standby even without using the phone...just doesnt make any sense.
I hope that there will be some extended life batteries available for both phones.

Well I don't normally listen to the radio as the reception where I live is so bad. But had a go for the first time. Now I had been using the HBH-DS970 and media player was still running. I added the wired handsfree but no radio I had to kill the media player process and re-start it. Anyway after is started I lost my T-mboile signal - which was a bit worrying as it is normally a full signal! So decided to re-boot. After a reboot had web, media player and messaging all running and checked for new emails etc and had no problems and even found I had 4.5mb of RAM free. This shows that the P990 had not really been stress tested with all the different radios onboard.

But Masseur thanks for introducing me to the radio, will try to use it on the way to work to see what kind of signal strenght I get.

the radio is good when used on its own and its nice not to have the faint beep beeping in the background that the K800 radio suffers from

but not being able to listen to the radio while reading a 34kb html email and keeping my context in the browser is a hopeless situation

as soon as my replacement TyTN comes back the P990 is going back in the box. I'll keep it for one more update and consider the situation at that time

The ONE thing missing from the TyTN for me, is the radio I like to listen to my own music on the way home but there is nothing to get me ready for work like Virgin breakfast radio

Hi Ares,
If you had actually read the many things i have said about manfacturers lauching prouducts that are not fit for purpose i hold them all as accountable as each other. Two wrongs don't make a right and i wouldn't buy an N80 either as yes you are right that also IMO is unacceptable. Also you can now update software at home as Nokia have now launched this service although for my N73 there is no update avaliable as none is needed in my opinion but i'm sure they are avaliable for phones that do have problems.

Marc

Battery Life

I am using my P990 like I did my M600, execpt now I have discovered the wonderful world of FM radio, and I find I am getting similar battery life. This is is what I typically do and I have around 40% battery life before I charge overnight:

- BT on for about 12 hrs
- Music listening over 2 hours (inc a bit of FM radio)
- PIM about 10/15 mins
- web for about 20-30 minutes
- a few calls, less than 15 mins
- no wifi usage at all

Don't use scheduled email download normally but an hourly download for a day that I tried had little impact on the battery

FM Radio

When I use the radio my T-mobile signal indicator goes to zero or very low. And even after I kill the Radio (media player) process I continue to have a zero/low signal indicated. This could just be a problem with the indicator but when I tried to use the web app I had no connection. Anyone else notice this behaviour with the radio?

Flip Open/Closed

Found that if you start the Messaging app in FC mode when you try to use it in FO mode the menus are different - 'Delete Message' is missing

when I get an email the phone vibrates to let me know Iopen it ub flip closed mode

As its opening it and it says "busy"... if I open the flip to see the message full screen I get an error

Application: Messaging, Reason code: E32USER-CBase, Reason number 48

this is what I used to do on series so I don't think about it until its too late

No problems with signal strength when radio is on.. (Vodafone)

I have been playing a bit more with loading many applications at the same time. Most or all major applications can be loaded at the same time (even when some of the initial memory has been sapped away down to about 10MB from 15 MB). Messaging, calendar, contacts. media player...

The single big issue appears to still be the browser...(large or small cache). It just takes away most of the memory available, thus killing all other applications when switched on.. I think they have to do something with the opera browser...

Interesting result with the Radio, Masseur is also on Vodafone while I am on T-mobile. Perhaps its a T-mobile thing! Having said that the problem is not consistent as I did manage to surf yesterday with the Radio switched-on.

General - having a radio on a mobile has never really interested me until now. Found a really good reggae station on my way to London this morning!
