I think static electricity is the biggest hazard when changing RAM. I guess if you damage the RAM through static when you fit it, that could damage the mobo too.

Never had one burn out near the ram sockets though!

Thanks all for the advice.

The shop I bought the RAM from last year volunteered to put it in as I don't think they had any idea if it would work or not. I did as I researched it before purchasing. It doesn't look like they botched anything but they didn't apply any special procedures or precautions either. The notebook worked fine with no issues and went like a rocket, then the fan began to run a lot, then it would switch off randomly, then it just didn't switch on at all one day.

The constant paging in my Vaio makes me worry about the longevity of the bearings in the HDD - my sidebar gadget says Vista uses 74% of RAM at idle! I occasionally run Fedora 10 Liveuser from a USB stick and the difference in the lack of drive and fan noise is remarkable. Battery life is extended to...

Well on idle windows 7 64 bit uses 80% of my 1gb ram, and running GTA iv it uses 100%

Part of the reason why I have a 20gb paging file...

I haven't looked, but I'd guess that there are unlikely to be any third party drivers for your wireless adapter. If there are though, they're likely to be here:

http://www.driverguide.com/

Last time I used that site it was a bit of pain though, due to a rather lengthy sign up process. That was a couple of years ago though so it might be alright again now. I'd give you my login details but they don't seem to work any more. Or I've forgotten them

Does anyone know why wireless mice wont work on my Vista laptop?
This is the 3rd one ive tried now, the mice and dongle communicate with each other but the cursor refuses to move. I tried going to Microsoft support site to see about drivers (although all 3 mice said they are not needed) but the search function is down and I couldn't find anything just through browsing.
Thanks.

Is perhaps your trackpad still assigned as the default? In Device Manager you should be able to change it I think

Hi dude,

I have a Toshiba A200 laptop with 4GB RAM. Although 4GB is fitted and recognized by CPU-Z, Windows recognizes only 3GB and hence doesnt use the other 1GB.

I know 32Bit PCs support upto 4GB RAM. Some suggested updating Vista to SP1. I did and still shows 3GB. I thoughtt I could try a 64Bit OS since it supports more RAM and my PC is capable of a 64bit OS. Some say it's the BIOS.

Any idea what to do?

Thanks

Vista 32 bit only uses a little over 3Gb of memory no matter how much you have physically installed. You would have to upgrade to Vista 64 bit (or Windows 7 64 bit if you can wait) to make the full 4Gb available.

@HornyNick

It could be what RyaN has suggested, however my wireless mouse and the track pad work happily together at the same time.

Cheap Argos crap? I'm saying nothing...

cheers but ive had enough now, im gonna stick to wired mice and just deal with the cable wrapping round everything.
And when it comes to Argos, I am proud to say that I have never and will never go near the Elizabeth Duke counter!

Cycovision, Thanks for the reply. My friend has a 32bit Dell and it recognizes 4GB. My OS is Genuine so I want to use it till the warranty expires at least.

Any other way?
