Pistorius wins appeal to compete in Beijing

Double amputee Oscar Pistorius can try to qualify for the Beijing Olympics after winning his appeal against a ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the South African said on Friday.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruled in January that runner Pistorius could not compete with able-bodied athletes because the carbon-fibre blades attached to both legs gave him an advantage.

The 21 year-old appealed to CAS, which ruled in his favour on Friday following a hearing with various scientists at the end of last month.

"I don't think 'really happy' describes it. I'm ecstatic. The battle has been going on for far too long. It is a victory for sports in general. I think this day will go down in history," Pistorius told a news conference in Milan, where his lawyers are based.

"Now I can definitely say the truth has come out. I have the opportunity once again to chase my dream of the Olympics, if not 2008, in 2012."

He confirmed he would run in able-bodied races in Milan on July 2 and at the Rome Golden Gala on July 11, where he competed last year and endeared himself to Italian fans.

The 400 metres will be his main target but he is realistic about his chances of making the Aug 8-24 Games with the qualifying deadline in late July.

"I've missed the whole South African season. The time period is very short. It's going to be very difficult for me to qualify (for the able-bodied Games)," he said.

CAMARADERIE BETTER

He could run in the relay in Beijing without a sufficient individual time but is not holding out much hope with South Africa's 4x400m team struggling to qualify.

Pistorius, who won gold in the 200 metres and bronze in the 100 metres at the 2004 Athens Paralympics, was emphatic that he would compete in this year's Paralympics in September whether he qualified for the able-bodied Games or not.

He reckoned the camaraderie between paralympians was better than between able-bodied athletes but said essentially there was no difference between the two.

"Sport is supposed to bring people together not judge and separate," he said.

Swiss-based CAS, the world's top sports court, said in a statement that the IAAF had not proved competition rules had been contravened by his J-shaped blades.

"On the basis of the evidence brought by the experts called by both parties, the panel was not persuaded that there was sufficient evidence of any metabolic advantage in favour of the double amputee using the Cheetah Flex-Foot," the statement said.

The IAAF welcomed the decision and said more research needed to be conducted into the effects of prostheses.

"The IAAF accepts the decision of CAS, and Oscar will be welcomed wherever he competes this summer," a statement said.

"He is an inspirational man and we look forward to admiring his achievements in the future."

Its going to be a cracker tomorrow in the Super 14.

The Blues got the weekend off to a perfect start for South African Vodacom Super 14 hopes when they scored a hard-fought 19-17 win over the Hurricanes in their final league match in Auckland on Friday morning.

Blow-by-blow scoring

By limiting the Hurricanes to just one bonus point, it effectively means that if both the Stormers and the Sharks pick up bonus-point wins in their final matches of the league season on Saturday, then South Africa will have two teams in the playoffs for a second successive year.

And if the Reds do what the Blues did by scoring an upset win when they face the Waratahs in another derby match on Saturday, we could even have one of the South African teams playing at home when the semifinals arrive next weekend. Had the Hurricanes won, they would have virtually assured themselves of second position and home ground advantage next week, and would have effectively ended any hope of a semifinal on South African soil.

Now there is everything to play for as the Stormers face the Lions in Johannesburg and the Sharks host the Chiefs on what promises to be a pulsating, exciting and tense conclusion to this phase of the Super 14 season.

@ Gucci:
ROLMAO! That's brilliant, LOL. Love that 'gold' fuel cap and how that red n' blue plastics are finding a way through the delicate layer of matt black.

Thanks for uploading those N81 pics, boet.

Lol true that. We are never happy with what we've got although that may change when you get the N95-8GB. My feelings about it is its a sweet phone,it has its little flaws but the features and Symbian S60 totaly make it worth getting. He got the N82 from his Dad, his Dad now has an E90, and E51, his uncle works for NOKIA SA. My bud has already used the N78 and i should get my hands on it in the next couple of weeks if im lucky, il post pics when i do.
Wanqa
i knew you would like them. you should have seen how that bike looked before they spray painted it Black LMAO!
Gola
Yep,it is, if the W900 could record in mp4 i bet it would be better though .
He prefers the N95-8gb, mainly because of the slider, and the big screen, i don't blame him, the N82s screen is dull when compared to N95-8gb and N81 screens, the N82 realy feels cheap as well, but WOW what a phone.
Ye the Black N78 looks better,i agree, white just doesnt suit it.

Hi all
VodaCom makes us pay to access hsdpa about 20sumting per month. Without that you can only access 3g. This really sucks. I'm at voda world now and that is no sign of h in my fone. I was told un activate hsdpa service on my contract.
Or my fone is faulty it doesn't display the h icon.

Vodacom don't seem to have much HSDPA coverage, a friend of mine got the SAMSUNG i450 (symbian s60 Samsung) and he can hardly get HSDPA coverage, ONLY 3G, which for me is still fast enough hey. Going to be getting a Wi-Fi router soon here at home so il surf the Web with that on my phone. I think it will be a while before HSDPA is cheaper and theres more coverage.

Even if you in an area with coverage. You will not be able to access 3gh less you are subscribed. I was at vodaworld and there is hsdpa there but still my fone only accessed 3g.

And about prices it now reasonable 1 gig for 289 per month. That the same pric

EDIT
Actually i do get 3g hsdpa, its the hsdpa 3.6 that you need to pay for.

and for some reason my fone don't see normal hsdpa as hsdpa. i think its the network parameters configured by vodacom

Taken from a GSMArena article re the new P5i:
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_[....]vealed_live_again-news-504.php :

'Sony Ericsson P5 - the new UIQ 3.3 user interface and the GPS navigation menu:

The Swiss Manager application reveals that the Sony Ericsson P5 runs on the same 208 MHz CPU as previous Sony Ericsson models. The amount of RAM installed is also the same - 128MB...'

How disappointing,
