What options do I have if I accidently delete Winsock (part of the registry)? Most of my apps don't work as well as my LAN. Do I have to reinstall XP? If I have backed up all my data to the D: drive will it still be there afterwards?
Thanks

It's worth trying winsock fix first:

If that doesn't work, then a repair reinstall rather than a full reinstall (it doesn't wipe all of your stuff) often will.
The stuff on your D drive will still be there after a full reinstall, as long as you don't accidentally install XP on to it instead of the C drive!

Hello there Cyco
I've got a gig left of space in my PC and the current harddrive has a "Power" and a "Data" cable plugged into it.
There is space for a second HDD and there is a "Data" cable but not a spare "Power" cable.
Any ideas?

In that case sir, you need one of these:
2 x 4 pin Y splitter for PATA / IDE
or, if it's a SATA drive or has the newer SATA style power connector:
SATA power cable Y splitter
Plenty of non-ebay suppliers out there if you google

@cyco
That worked a charm. Sir, I owe you a pint or three. Thanks. It sorted out all my network sharing problems too.

Do you mean that the setup program won't start the installation because the OS isn't recognised? or the CD just won't read?
Download the drivers from the linksys site on a different PC and copy them to a USB pen drive?
If there aren't any Windows 7 drivers for it yet, and the Vista ones won't install or work, then you'll just have to wait I guess!

Just to add to that, make sure you download the driver for the right type of os (eg if your os is 32 bit, download vista 32 bit drivers. If your os is 64 bit download vista 64 bit drivers.)

Hi there!
I have a Vaio CS notebook with Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor T3400 (2.1GHz) running Vista sp1 and only 1GB RAM.
I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 4GB shortly - is there anything I should know before I do the upgrade?
(My 3 1/2 yr old Compaq notebook running XP died last year about 1 month after upgrading the RAM to the 2GB max - diagnosis was burnt out motherboard at the RAM ports, so I'm a little nervous)
Thanks in advance

Blimey, I can see why your nervous!
All I can say is that in all the years I've been messing around with computers, I've never had one die on me for that specific reason, so I think you'd have to be very unlucky for it to happen again.
Just buy a good brand of memory and make sure the contacts on the motherboard are clean and free of dust, fluff etc. before you fit it and it should be fine.
You will definitely notice the difference after running Vista with 1Gb

Hi there doubt that's your problem! When I was young ( and naive ) I replaced some RAM was a bit vigourous removing the old piece put the new one in and the mobo burnt out! Just be careful, check where your mobos RAM limit is and good luck!!

just bear in mind that vista 32bit (x86) can see 4gb ram but it will only use 3.25gb at the max.
