Only if you have a working motherboard that you can test the CPU in. It is more likely to be the motherboard at fault than the CPU but you can't be sure without trying it.

i cant agree more with that.

i had a system that had a cheapo psu in it and when we had a thunderstorm last year, it blew the psu and i thought it had taken the whole lot with it including the (high spec at the time) sound card.

i have just recently built a new system and put the card in my new system and to my amazement, it worked fine

Sounds like there are a bunch of services running that are just in a continual loop attempting to close (prob something like iTunes)

I thoroughly recommend using a program called TuneUp Utilities which will scan your system and give you a load of performance options, which will pinpoint the services that are hanging when you shutdown, and will override anything that takes longer than 15seconds to shutdown. Give it a try

maybe its a power saving feature where it limits the speed of the processor to improve battery life

I'm trying to install some anti-virus software but it tells me that I have to remove something called 'AVG8' beforehand. (which I think is another type of AV software.)

Having searched my drives for this software and attempted to remove it with the software removal tool it is nowhere to be found - not in the program files, nowhere. My Antivirus indicates it was once located in the c:/program files but it isn't there now.

I have deleted all traces of it from my laptop but its still preventing the installation.

What is the best way to ensure all traces of this AVG 8 is removed from my laptop?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Well my powerbook isnt the best looking one out there but it runs fine.

How hard would it be to drop the innards into this one?

I d/led a few files but they wont play with audio.
WMP just plays the video without any error messages,
DIVX says "This file contains a track in the Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192") format. You may need to install a DirectShow decoder for this audio format in order to hear the soundtrack of the file"
Quicktime gave me the option to d/l the codec but I cancelled it, mistakenly thinking it would offer it me again.

Where can I d/l the codecs from?
Thanks.

Hello, a linux question here (Calm yourself down Paul!)

I'm having trouble getting telnetd to work (so I can get onto my windows box) I tried /etc/ services start telnetd after installing some plugins, but I just get /etc/ is a command or something.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
