i don't bealive it, he says the contrast ratio of the screen is 1:262
thats Bull$$#@$t.

I'm not sure it is - unless this was not a retail version we are seeing a very distinct picture taking place, some Z1's have a screen comparable to the Z and some have a screen comparable to the ZU or better, I have not seen a pattern that the C6902 has the lesser screen simply because the reviews don't readily give that info or do they actually state it is a retail version - I didn't know the C6902 was a lot cheaper - why is that ?

Interesting reviews. Some reviews have a Z1 that has the best display on the market and some have a Z1 that has the same display as the Z.
In my opinion it is obvious that my source was right about the display lottery. Most of the low quality displays will be used for C6902. People getting the C6903, C9643 or the C6906 will most likely end up with an excellent display.

I'm not going to buy the C6902, hence this is good news

rphilippe - you sure? according to the manual, there is also an 8mp 3:4 mode in addition to the 16:9 mode. but like Geoffxx said.. the 16:9 mode samples the 20mp down to 8mp, which is supposed to give better results than straight 8mp..

I just mean that I like the 16:9 mode, but I thought it weird that the resolution is only 8mp

Yes there is also a 3:4 setting too.

But I see that if it is supposed to be good, then that's ok.

20mp - 8mp is quite a jump though still.

think of it like this

you have a box that is 8cm2 and you stuff 20cm2 of pixels in there - it will look very compact and smooth

BTW guys if my Z1 which arrives today has a screen the same as a Z it will be going back in the box - It needs to be as good as the ZU I had, not that the Z was bad but the ZU is in a different ballpark and I was under the impression the Z1 would be also

I would say that Sony are over achieving with the Z1.. good job

HTC one sensor form factor is 16/9, not the same as iphone.
Not that i think it is better, i have never tried htc one, but for size comparison it woud be better to reflect the accurate form factor, as most screens are 16/9 and 99% of photo viewing is on screen, it is not an irrelevant choice from HTC and could stack up better comparing horizontal sizes

I know in my region we would be getting the 4g model but in october both of these support the bands 3 and 7 used here

So anyone know what is the difference.

C6902 is a 3G only phone. NO LTE.

The others (C6903, C6906, C6943) support various bands of LTE. C6903 and C6943 are the same except for video encoding version and the region they are released. C6906 supports different LTE bands.

ok. hopefully that's settles it. no more what's the difference

UNBOXING/REVIEW OF C6903 (my assumption based on where he bought it) RETAIL VERSION (he said he purchased it himself)

viewing angles on it are great, i think.

You've got to hand it to Samsung. They hid one of the most relevant and important aspects of a screen, the brightness, and caused a frenzy over one of the least relevant aspects of a screen, the viewing angles.

The brightness on amoleds are unforgivablely bad, yet no one says a word - too occupied with viewing angles.

it's just like apple hiding all the many shortcomings of the iphone.. while review sites and consumers alike ooh and ahh..

they stick a fingerprint scanner on there and people forget the rest.

guess that is the power of majority market share

That's one aspect to this. One good feature and the lack of thousands of others are forgotten.

But this is something else. If you have a fingerprint scanner, it won't affect your view on the speakers.

But here, the least significant quality of a screen makes all the important qualities unimportant. And that too, a quality which many see positively even if they measure it in an opposite manner - I mean, some people don't want extremely 'good' viewing angles, so, for them, 160 degrees is pushing it... Brightness, on the other hand... Well, anyone that's used their phone outside a dark environment will find this important, and people that use their phones outside in the sun or under lights will find this very, very important.

I do not believe that Z1 uses screen leftovers from Z/ZL, it is impossible because newer screens have triluminous which is a hardware feature of the screen.

I call false on the one who posted on XDA unless he can provide photos of the screen disassembled itself to see if it is indeed exactly identical in every part with a Z screen.

Also, its really funny if you google what contrast ratio is, you'll find out that there is no standard way of measuring contrast ratio, meaning you can easily manipulate what numbers you come up with with contrast ratio.

^that's true. I completely forgot about the many different methods of determining contrast ratio. That's why when you buy certain TVs .. some will have insane contrast ratio, while others will seem so much inferior, but in reality, they are very much the same. In some cases, the lower number being even better. It all depends on how it was measured.

the person on XDA probably got it from here.. and then pieced together a few reviews from various sites to "prove" his post. So far, every review I have seen, where the reviewer actually purchased a Z1 (i.e., retail version) has loved their screen and stated the viewing angles are very improved over the Z and should not be an issue.

I really can't wait to get one. I'm honestly itching to just push the button and get C6903 and sacrifice that one LTE band.. decisions.. decisions..
