Tried this one mate as I have a Sandisk 512MB and converted it to 940 or somethin'. Put all my files back and it was okay until I passed the 512 capacity. It says some i/o error and was not able to save the data that was being written.

So formatted it back to 512 for stability. So sorry but this one for me does not work. Cheers anyway.

i've tried the 512 to 1gb thing. well, i could have the card formated to 1gb using several different methods. i've done it using the phone via usb, using a card reader, using windows xp management tools, whatever.
it indeed showed 938MB or so, but fact is that nothing is written on the card if there are more than 468MB on it. i tried small files, one big 700MB file, smaller and biggers and it doesnt work. same error all the times.
i doubt people could really write more date on the sticks than the nominal 512mb capacity. i doubt. by the way, mine's a sandisk 512MB and a W800i R1L FW.

You are right, I tried it with my sandisk 1GB and it refuses anything beyond the 1GB limit. So forget this.

Are you referring to the adapter that lets you plug a MemStick Duo into a standard Memstick reader? I was having the same problem with it. My Sandisk 1gb card didn't come with an adapter so I tried using the one that came with the phone which is a Sony branded one (for the 64mb card). The 64mb card works fine but the 1gb didn't. So then I removed just the 64 MS due from the adapter and plugged in the 1gb and now windows sees it and is able to write to it. Using a third party USB Media Reader I can't see the 'extra' partition though. I'll have to check it out once I get home.

BTW it's been my experience that once XP tags storage as "removeable" (puts the little blue disk on the icon in Disk Manager) you are unable to delete/create its partitions. Win2k has no such problems. For some reason the SE USB Mass Storage driver does not report it as Removable (possibly why there are delayed write issues when unplugging too soon).

Just formatted my 1gb Sandisk to 1.85gb and started loading it up with MP3s. As soon as I got to 955mb I started having issues. I tried to add another folder and the it would fail stating that the device is not ready. I then tried to just add a single more mp3 and access to the drive locked up. I tried to remove it and re-insert it and it wouldn't read any data from it. When I insert it in my phone, it locks up until the memory is removed. I formatted it using the phone but then I put it in the SanDisk adapter and into a USB2 media reader to load up the music faster - that's when I got the problems.

Next I plugged my phone to the computer via usb (with no card inserted because it locks up the phone now), then inserted the card into the phone and now i can see the information on the card in windows. Any attempt to remove the file which caused it to lock up (ACDC Thunderstruck caused the system to stop being able to read from the MemStick. I have now re-formatted the card again in windows and it no longer locks up the phone, however i would like to get it back to its default storage of 1gb. This is not worth it to me if it's gonna be so buggy.

I tried to do this and actually thought it would work. I should have read this thread more carefully because know I'm in deep shit!

I loaded the card full with mp3s and then the phone stopped responding. After a while I turned it off, and now it can't recognize the card... hmm... Not even when I connect it to the computer... and the option to format the card is now unavailable in the phone....

Anyone got any tips!?

I would also like too warn everyone else from doing the same mistake as me...

Everyone listen to i99olmi and stop messing with ur memory cards. If you want bigger buy bigger. i99olmi unfortunately the only suggestion I have is to try the card in a card reader and you might be able to get something out of it in disk manager by partitioning it to the appropriate size and formatting in FAT. If not your probably out of luck and your only port of call is the warranty which might well be refused if you have fiddled with it. I would try the shop you got it from first, hopefully they won't be technically skilled enough to know what you have done and will just give you a straight swap.

Please... there is a reason for manufacturers to make 512mb, 1gb, 2gb instead of letting you all format it to larger capacity. When it says 512mb. It is only that much. Period.

@i99olmi: Find a friend with a PSP (playstation portable) and insert your card in the PSP. After power on the PSP will insist on reformatting the card. It puts the normal format on it and you can reuse the card w/o problems. The PSP specific directories which it puts on it you should delete of course.

Get a Sandisk:

The phone should be able to handle 2gb without a problem.

@i99olmi

Do the following:
1. Remove the MemStick from your phone.
2. Plug your phone in the computer via USB cable - wait for the PC to detect and initiate the phone as a memstick reader.
3. Insert the memory in the phone - phone SHOULD remain operable and windows SHOULD detect the mem stick.
4. Open the content of the MemStick in Windows and look for some of the FIRST FILES you copied on to it. Start deleting them. You might have to delete all the files that you can before your phone will be able to respond to the mem stick.

I had to delete only 2-3 files and they were all normally 'working' files. The one file which caused the same thing to happen to my phone (lock up with MS in it and respond only when removing the MS) I could not delete so I didn't even bother with it. I just deleted a couple of other files - I believe that opened up "room" on the card for it to start being responsive in the phone.

I then removed the mem stick from the phone, disconnected the phone from the PC and re-inserted the MemStick. If your phone does not lock up - go straight in the File Manager > Menu and format the ext. memory.

I hope this helps

The thing with the PSP I haven't tried yet. Will try to find someone with a PSP...

The trick Tervel mentioned:

I can't get it to work. Which drives do you have installed for the usb? I have the one from Sony Ericson (same as Microsoft?) and it recognise a device in explorer but I can't see any files or folders. It is however possible to browse the phone memory in My Phone Explorer...

Thanks for all the help people! Hopefully can I get some of it to work soon...
