Heh heh. I wonder if I would get good betting odds on 'Sony'.

It'll be interesting to watch how the phone designs change with this news, to see Sony can still come up with beautiful unique designs without Ericsson.

Obviously both Sony and Ericsson agree that this is for the better and I think most people agree that Sony Ericsson is having trouble competing.
Personally, I can't wait to see what the rebranding looks like.

I don't know how much I like this news even though it makes sense. The funny thing I came to SE from the Sony side. But Esato's made me appreciate the Ericsson side more. I'm not sure where I'd go. I still want the mini pro. And I'm not sure I can trust Samsung for the long run because my phones usually last several years.

UPDATE- Sony president and CEO Sir Howard Stringer has just addressed the media on the proposed buyout and confirmed that the company will indeed move away from feature phones, as previously stated. This effectively heralds the death of the Walkman line and the dawn of Sony's exclusively Android era, though Stringer's not ruling out the possibility of bringing another OS on board. When asked whether his firm would consider buying webOS, the exec said simply, "Never say never."
EDIT->> Sony coy over Windows Phone and webOS

I don't see how it heralds the death of Walkman phones considering there has been 2 Android Walkman phones and Sony recently announced its own Android Walkman device but I guess we'll have to see what happens
Anyway, I'm pretty happy to hear this news, and I can't wait to see what devices will come out of it. |

Stringer: phones will supercharge tablet strategy
At Sony's press conference about its acquisition of Ericsson's portion of the smartphone alliance, CEO Sir Howard Stringer told TechRadar
"[Acquiring the smartphone division] will help as if our devices are all connected, then there are many opportunities to seed each other's product and to transfer that to another device whenever you move - if you don't want to watch it on your smartphone, watch it on a tablet; if you don't want to watch it on a tablet, fling it to a TV," Stringer said to TechRadar.
When pushed on how he anticipated the alliance would help in the fight against the likes of Apple and Microsoft, Stringer pointed to the content Sony already owns and how being able to port that across the full range of connected devices is crucial:
"It's a connected world that we've finally connected, and I think in the last year people have finally stopped asking me 'Why do you own content?'.
"It's taken me five years to get through a press conference without people asking that question, and now we can use our content as a weapon to drive sales of these products and also cheer up the consumer." |

I am excited about what may come but also not holding my breath. But I do see this as an opportunity for Sony to improve it's devices. Hopefully we will see better build quality etc too. Not sure if it's Ericsson or being made in China blamed on that. Could this also mean some of their top flagship devices like the old s700i for instance Made in Japan??

You can not blame Ericsson for bad quality. Sony Ericsson is a company and they do all of the decisions, bad quality is therefor a result of a series of decisions to make a larger profit. And that is a series of strange decisions due to the demand of high quality devices.
