windows mobile phones don't get updated online

when a firmware update is available you download an executable to your pc and run it from there and that does the installation for you.

as part of that process you are shown the current version, and the version to be installed and if its the same version you still get the choice to continue

@masseur:

Wousd that apply for the Vodafone v1605 as well? In that case, would Voda make the update available to me or will I have to take the 1605 to them for update?

Thankss

Well to keep this thread slightly more comparative than just TyTN support.... A comparison generally involves the hardware side and features and in this respect the P990 stacks up pretty well and may even come out on top in the pro/cons stake. The addition of the FM Radio was a big plus as I listen to a lot of Radio4 and from what I understand it has a radio transmitter so you can use it in your car as your mp3 player. (The TyTN has no FM radio)

If the phones came just as is and you never ran any other software on it then it would be a much closer call. When I look a little beyond that I sadly realise that for me the P990 has an Achilles heel from the point of how I want to use my smartphone.

When the developers of SMan indicated that they were not 'feeling' UIQ3. I had niggling doubts about the availability of 'killer' apps.

Killer apps for me are things such as TCPMP - it's just so handy being able to watch stuff I've captured from TV, Films, Simpson etc on my smartphone, and TomTom Mobile/Navigator; I play guitar in a group (look for them on Xfactor this year ) and I'm in a different part of the country every week, we just don't get lost anymore!

The fact that such software may or may not appear for UIQ3 gives me cause for pause, and I suspect other 'power' users like myself.

Shame really as I wanted it to do well. I will still come back to visit the this forum from time to time and see if ResidentEvil is still taking pics with his P9xx.... at least the quality of the pictures of the female form in Starbucks will improve immensely.

@masseur,

Is there such an executable file anywhere to be found?
Has it been made available yet?

Thanks

@Jah

I know about WisePilot but it's not TomTom which I consider to be overall the best. I don't really want to have to find (inferior) substitutes... which only serves to highlight my point.

TomTom is just an example. I have to make a predictive decision and with the all information to hand the decision isn't as hard as it should be.

@Wam7, well fromthe information here at Esato there will a version of Tom Tom for UIQ3 but they have not started yet...so no telling when it will be available. If Tom Tom is a killer issue then buy the TyTn from www.clove.co.uk with the code promotional NWS0801A for a total price of UKP443. I have ordered a P990 and TyTN so that I can compare, but my preference is the P990 as I prefer the phone format of the design and I hev had a very bad experience with WM5.

@Avantis... you've asked 3 times now.

Did you even look if there was on update on the HTC site? (assuming its the HTC you have)

firmware updates will be available on manufacturers sites so that is the place to look. I haven't visited the HTC site yet but when I had i-mates, they also provided the original firmware for download

go take a look and let us know

You need to be a little more careful before you are assuming that people are lying publicly, or they are such idiots tha they do not know te make of a device they have just purchased..

Thank you for tte hospitality anyway and good luck...

seems you read me completely wrong.

I don't know what brand you have and there have been discussions in this thread of the HTC version, the orange version and the vodafone version

I was not implying that you did not what you had, I was merely making an assumption that you also had the HTC version and thus you should look at the HTC site as its obviously no good looking at the HTC site if you have the orange version or the voda one.

I've taken a look at the HTC site now and don't see any firmware yet

hope that answers your question
