Sorry, I meant the lack of multitouch (its very important for me, games and zoom). At least here in Sweden it hasnt done that good. Desire is selling alot better and it pisses me of because MT is the main reason.
But I guess failure isnt the right word.. "Not as good as it could have sold" maybe is a better way of putting it |

IF SE is afraid to take the risk, they will not go far. As I have said many times before, all they are going to do is catching up with other manufacturers. Unless they want a big change in their situation right now, they have to make big decisions and take big risks. That is the device with the specification I mentioned on my last post.
Next year will be even harder for SE, even this year is quite tough for SE as their so-called high-end phone X10 is overshadowed by iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire (not even a flagship phone) in sales, as the usual top guns will released better and more powerful devices. Plus Nokia, who is coming back in the scene with high-end MeeGO to be released later this year. For sure, the Nokia MeeGO will be a feature-packed phone based on the comment of Nokia's top official about N8 positioning it as a high-end to mid-range smartphone than a high-end one. We both know N8 spec is monstruous and I can't imagine what will the MeeGo spec be.
If you look at the spec sheet that I made, it is not even over-the-top as most of the features there are had been incorporated into the smartphones of today already. The only things new are the dual-core processor, 720p screen, 1080p video recording, 1 GB RAM, microSDXC, and 32 GB moviNand memory. The last two should not be even considered as to be that new as there have been phones with 32 GB internal memory since 2008, and we may see the first phone that support microSDXC later this year. The 1080p video recording and 1 GB RAM are normal to be expected from 2011 devices because the trend seems to go that way. The other hardware parts, and features like Bluetooth 4 will appear later this year in some devices. The microHDMI can be already be seen on Acer Stream. Nexus One, iPhone 4 and Motorola Droid X all of them have dual mics with noise cancellation technology. Nokia have included FM Radio with RDS and FM Transmitter since N95 which is a 2007 device. So how hard is it going to be to incorporate all of these features into one device?
Taking a trip down memory lane, most of the iconic devices in mobile phone history are high-end phones. Starting with Nokia 6600, which sold almost 10 million worldwide and had an initial price of €600. The features were VGA camera, Bluetooth, Infrared, etc. Next, of course is the Sony Ericsson P800, the trend-setter of its time. This phone was a commercial success despite of high price and SE's saviour during the very hard first few years of the merger. It is essential to note that even Steve Job seems to be very fond of P800. Who will forget the N95? When it was first announced in September of 2006, every one was in awe. It was the first phone to combine 5.0 megapixel camera plus VGA recording @ 30 fps, GPS, 2.6 screen, dual-slide mechanism design, accelometer, 3G, video editing software and new version of S60. The high price did not stop it from selling well and Nokia even released another version which is N95 8Gb. The successes of these high-end phones clearly show the importance of high-end specification in attaining commercial success of smartphones.
With SE, I know it is make-or-break, but that is the risk they have to take if they want to attain success. Next year is competition is about to get tougher as we will see a lot of high-end devices running on Android and Windows Mobile 7. Plus, the new player, MeeGo and the reviving Symbian. But if SE incorporate those features that I mentioned, they would stand a chance. That list is a perfect combination of feature set for next year. Then, get the design right and implement the software good, SE have success written all over that device. We have seen the commercial successes of Nokia 6600, the Legend Sony Ericsson P800 and the impeccable Nokia N95 which were mainly due to their high-end specification. It is hard to look at a device in whole and tell it will sell well if one of the essential features is missing.

I totally agree with what you're saying but it takes balls to release such products when they are just starting to get back on track. The things you have put in your list are all reasonable features for a phone but I think there is way more to lose than gain. After the Nokia N95, the N96 didn't do that well but Nokia got away with it. Moto after the Razr almost died and only now they are getting up to speed.
Anyways, I think there is the X10a release tomorrow so yee ha to you guys. WP7 devices going through the FCC in numbers so the launch is coming soon which means our Xperia should show up as well.

^I do not see any reason why SE can't release that kind of phone. Look at Motorola, they were in a very bad situation compared to SE last year but still they managed to come up with Droid, which has been a commercial success even up to now. Just last month, Droid X has been announced and released quickly. We both know the specification of the Droid X and we sure can both agree it is a very high spec phone. In fact, that's where I got some of the features I think SE should incorporate to the their next year's high-end phone.
Do you see where I am getting at? Motorola wanted to stop the losses so they made a move to bring the company up again, by making great Android phone portfolio that includes top end smartphones. Kudos to them. Their bad situation last year did not stop them from making monstruous-spec'ed smartphones. They even plan of releasing an Android phone with 2 Ghz Processor. You can clearly see Motorola's determination to gain back what they lost. Motorola sure got some balls.
How about SE? They make a phone with a great design, great camera and processor but forget to include multi-touch, an essential feature of smartphone today. They also seem to choose a crappy OS, and refuse to give kinetic scrolling to the whole UI when the OS allows it. With SE, their high-end phones seem to lack one or two essential features, of all the features! When SE is going to show the world what it has become since the merger in 2003. SE have to release a high-end smartphone with really top-end specification like they did in 2003, when they set the trend of smartphone with the P800. |

SE came from nothing back in 2001 to wow people with the P800, T610, S700 and so on. I don't see why they can't make a 'ballsy' decision now like they must have done back then. I would say they are in a better position now after the X10 release than back after the merger for releasing an absolute killer phone.

I feel quite different. I am sensing another high-end device which is not so high-end and lacks another essential feature/s. It would be a great addition to SE's line of high-end phones to moan about. |

Exclusive: Sony Ericsson to introduce Android 3.0 gaming platform and PSP Go-like handset
Here's what we can tell you about the hardware: if you're a gaming fan, this is exactly the kind of phone you've been waiting for. The device is described as cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go -- in other words, it's a landscape slider with game controls in place of the typical QWERTY keyboard. The D-pad is here, but instead of the small joystick, the device will have what was described as a "long touch pad" for analog controls, along with standard PSP buttons and shoulder buttons. The phone has a large display, described as being between 3.7- and 4.1-inches with WVGA or better resolution, a 5 megapixel camera we're told might not be final, and will likely have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU on-board. The phone is mostly black with some silver highlights, and the gamepad area is white / silver in color. Apparently it's currently branded as an Xperia device, but it looks like it will carry PlayStation branding as well. Those who've seen the phone say it looks "pretty damn sexy." The mockup above probably doesn't do the actual hardware justice, but it should give you an idea of what you'll be dealing with.
On the software side, it looks like the device will be running Gingerbread (Android 3.0) with a phone-specific skin, and there will be a new area of the Android Market specifically for the games. That content will be initially accessible only by the halo device, but from the sounds of things, these titles might be made available to other Android phones if their specs and button layouts meet requirements. Games will be graphically in the range of PSX or PSP games, meaning true 3D gaming is headed to Android. Titles currently being shown off seem to be focused around some older PSX as well as new PSP offerings, with God of War, Modern Warfare, and Little Big Planet on tap, and future plans for titles which incorporate augmented reality features.
