hi all, i'm form slovakia and next week i'mgoing to visit your amaying country. The first 6 weeks it will be business trip and then I plan to stay there for next 3 weeks, to travel.

I have some question, I hope you can help me...

1. I'd like to buy a local prepaid sim card, my question is, which provider has the best network, I planto staz in area of Richards bay, kwazulu, durban and then cape town.

Is there any provider with prepaid card with GPRS/Edge/UMTS internet access ? I'd like to use a google earth with gps receiver during my trip.

IS there any south africa map for mobile TomTom? or is there some other navigation soft for symbian used in SA?

thanks for help

Hey Branimer (cool name by the way)

There are four networks to choose from but with what you going to be needing I would go for either Vodacom or MTN (good coverage with EDGE/3G and 3.5G/HSDPA country wide)

Here is a pricelist of Vodacoms Data Bundles if you interested.Just do a currency conversion with our South African Rand (ZAR) and see what that translates to for you. (By the way Wangs,give me a comparison of the data bundle prices you get over there in the UK with what I've got below.)

MyMeg150mb=R119.00 (0.79c/mb)
MyMeg250mb=R160.00 (0.64c/mb)
MyMeg500mb=R189.00 (0.38c/mb)
MyMeg1GB=R289.00 (0.28c/mb)

About the Tom Tom software and maps for South Africa Im afraid I can't give you a answer on that one but I'm sure someone here will help you out with an answer.

By the way,what phone do you have? Im always curious

We are the grade8's mentors after all, so why not respect?
So after getting my haircut went to Cedar Square to join some friends for lunch in Ciaou Baby or whatever they call that restaurant, one of them got a HTC S710 two days ago, and he hates it, he had a Nokia N90 before. Must say the S710 aint exactly the fastest phone around, its worse than the TyTN i had used during the holidays, still think S710 is a sweet phone though,its just letdown by the lil TI OMAP-850 200mhz CPU, for anyone thinking of getting i'd say rather wait till the S730 gets here.

@ Hobbster:
There are 3 fave themes that I alternate between.

I usually use the first one, called 'Transgreen', which I downloaded from Zedge. I chose it to suit my new bike's main colour (which I diiig) and flowing lines, which I uploaded and selected as the wallpaper for this particular theme.

Next is 'Smoke-Abstract', really keeewwl but not the easiest to read from.

Really dig this one, entitled 'Organica':

As regards MB rates/prices from the UK networks: Prices for data usage used to be astronomical here, but they're dropping significantly, possibly due to the wonders of wi-fi etc. They used to be around 3-4 a meg, a year or two ago!!
Orange charge 2 for unlimited use per day, Vodafone charge 1 for the first 15 megs, then 2 (approx R28) a meg (!) thereafter! However, T-Mobile now give you unlimited data for 7.50 a month (approx R105). O2 dropped their data rates recently too. Not sure what their new tariffs are; will check later.

@ branimir:
Dobry vecer.
I have a spare, unused Vodacom PAYG simcard lying around somewhere. If I find it later, I'll PM you to get a postal address. If you want it, I'll send it to you in Slovakia during this week. Then you could give friends, family and colleagues your mobile SA number before you leave. Don't worry about payment; it cost me next to nothing and a few 's to post it from the UK to Slovakia won't cause me to starve. I managed to assist fellow esato member, 'goldenface', in the same way too.
Vodacom is the biggest cellphone network in SA and generally has the best coverage.

lmao,couldn't agree more.that was nothing,we had the same rule at our school.we weren't even allowed to hold hands in the school building...never seen anybody get into trouble though.hmmm,i wonder what the officials intend to do when they find u/16s breaking that law?how will they even know that they are u/16 at the time...

Branimir, i agree that Vodacom would probably be your best bet, mate. I'd also post some simcards to you, but they would probably reach Slovakia after you'd arrived in South Africa.

Jojo, yes indeed mate, the temperatures do reach the high thirties here now and then during the summer months, and the heat becomes oppressive when the humidity climbs into the high 80s and above. Thank goodness for airconditioning, the ocean and swimming pools

So true its going to be very interesting, can't exactly stop or arrest two u16s from sucking face, this law im sure will go on ignored just like the law where restaurants aren't allowed to sell alcohol to u18s but they do it anyway.

@ Branimir:
Ahoj.
I can easily send the simcard to that Protea Hotel in Richard's Bay, but the postal service in SA is not 100% reliable, i.e. I cannot guarantee it will arrive at its intended destination...
Also, there may not be much point sending one from here to SA, as all you would have to do then is ask the hotel staff where the nearest superstores are that sell cellphone simcard packs, like Pick n' Pay, Clicks, etc. and you'll be able to buy one for only a few Rands!

I'm sure the other guys can confirm those bundles for PAYG. Also, I know this may be very obvious, but just make sure the 6120 is unlocked to accept one of the SA sims. SA uses the same frequency bands as Europe.
