Eish, so what happens when there's a power failure in Cape Town and you're stuck in the cable-car? You either stay put or do what one lady did... you jump!

Said the supplier was closed, but the supplier closing isnt my problem if the store manager said 4-8 weeks, i dont expect waiting 18 weeks.

That's bloody poor service. 18 weeks is ridiculous. What kind of supplier closes for 18 weeks?! Do they mean to say that they can't find an alternative supplier at all?
@ JC,
No boet, I kinda was like that years ago, but you reach a point when the word 'gatvol' becomes the only perfect word to describe a need to change strategies.
Unfortunately, one HAS to really put one's foot down in such situations. I'm not saying being 'haregat' to the point of unacceptably rude or even worse insulting (which is also unacceptable), but being very assertive and MAKE them explain as to why it's taking so long and challenge them when given a dof answer, so that you can then filter through what's BS and what's plausible.
One of the few good habits that I've picked up from the Poms is that they don't stand for kak service like that at all. They're fully aware of their consumer rights and will quickly let one know how many 'blue beans make five' if they've been treated unreasonably in a consumer environment. I'm not saying that's the solution for all, but damn, it seems to solve most around here..

@Rhino: Sorry to hear about all the wedding-related anxiety....I'll be hitting the 3-0 next month and I'm nowhere near getting hitched...always joke about it to my girlfriend.

Back onto cellphones...The last couple of days I've noticed three people, on the street with their Apple iPhones firmly stuck to their ears. My former colleague at my old newspaper got an unlocked one through some backdoor via Australia...and the only ones I've seen for sale are online...and most of them are the 8GB model which goes for anything over R5k...compared to the $399 (R2857 at the current exchange) which the phone is sold for on the AT&T website.

Like I've previously said, I've played with the iPhone...its pretty nice but jeez, the price of currently acquiring it is pretty steep...If I'm paying that sort of money it should at least come with a warranty.

Thing is, from what rhino sez, he's paid for it already. He's done that in good faith I'm sure; unfortunately that's a 'business faux pas' (IMHO) in this modern dog-eat-dog society...
A deposit for something that has to be made up is/ should be the standard business ethic.
But total amount up front before completion is such a risk; it screws a lot of options in a case like this.
Happens occasionally in the domestic building industry here, for example.

Rhino, I sincerely hope they pull their finger out and make a drastic plan boet, and quick, 'cos this reeks of Grade A BS from those jewellers.

@ Hobbster,
Seems like No-Go Bafana at the moment... do you remember the hostile reception they got last time upon their unceremonious return?
