Ok to start of the UK has more independent dealers and other outlets which sell phones on a competition basis... allowing cheaper and better offers on branded and unbranded handsets!!
we only have around 6!!! my statement was based on cost prices which isnt available to the public unfortunately.... SPs try and sell more contracts coz they are rewarded more. when they sell a phone alone they actually losing money so tend to sell the phone at a higher price.
but in terms of phone pricing, its very similar.... if their were more independent dealers here phone pricing will definately decrease!!!
I notice phone pricing all over and yes the k700 price is actually cheaper here than it is there!!! (if the rand is still at R12 to the pound)
im not giving cost pricing away.....
hope i provided sum justification..... but i know what i know and yes im right!!!! even to go as far as saying we could sell phone cheaper than the UK.... if we had the same infrastructure as them...
I do however see that hapening here as phones are outdated in like 9 months and people want to upgrade every year.... so if the phones were relatively cheap they wud just buy it and after a year upgrade again.... but thats not for me to decide
but i guess u right they are getting ripped of here... but only cos theres no competition!!!! :)
and only by a couple 100 rand...

@786KBR, the whole debate is on the prices the public pays..who said anything about the cost prices which are unavailable to the general public?

@786KBR,
you've just provided some very DOGMATIC ramblings...back up your arguments with more factual content and links and then you might be a tad more convincing.

@786KBR,
Prices and facts?
As I mentioned in my previous post, I'll be glad if you prove me wrong, with facts.
Regarding independent dealers in the UK...OK, if you want me to start quoting prices from the 3 biggest cellphone chainstores here as further proof, no problem.
Here's just one of the three..have a good look at the prices, particularly the PAYG offers at the bottom of the page.

Need more links and info? Just let me know.

@786KBR: Clicks gave the best deal on this particular phone. Vodashop and MTN were would've ripped me off if I bought the phone PAYG. Their prime focus is still on people who sign 2 year contracts... the crappy phones are offered to the PAYG segment of the market. When you go into these shops saying you want 2 buy a phone they look at you funny.

@786KBR,
Then why make statements on this forum that you can't back up?

@786KBR,
Thanks, I will be, because MOST people in our warm beautiful country battle enough financially as it is,without some of the excessive cellphone pricing compounding things.

What a dogmatic comment, but I guess we are all entitled to our opinions...
I rest my case.

@Brix I have told a few customers about the none branded 6680 handset.Most of them told me they rather wait until Vodafone 6680 arive.I even told them buy the 6680 and flash it in a month time with Vodafone sw @ Vodacare for FREE.They still said WE WILL WAIT.............Brix most Vodashops are selling more branded handsets than the none branded.Vodafone live is doing well.........What are you going to do when all networks brand there phones.If you flash it to the original sw the networks can not help you on MMS/GPRS settings.You will say i will put them in manualy.What if you have a problem.All cellphone stores hate when customers walk in and ASK CAN YOU PLEASE LOAD MY MMS/GPRS SETTING or activate my card for GPRS.When you buy a VODAFONE LIVE HANDSET all what i mention is done automaticaly..........ITS LIKE PLUG AND PLAY

Hi. I'm hoping this is a good place to ask my question. I'm in Boston, USA. My daughter is off to Capetown for a year real soon now. A friend visiting in SA last week bought her a prepaid starter kit. It says "Super 6 4U Starter Pack" on it. It appears that when the plane lands she can stick this in her unlocked GSM phone, dial 100, and she might be good to go. Except I suspect this starter kit doesn't include any prepaid time. I also suspect that this is a Johanesburg number (076 XXX XXXX).
It looks like you folks are experts and you call can give me light tap with the clue stick.
thanks ! - ben

Hi Ben...Super 6 basically means she'll have 6 months access to the Vodacom network. I speak under correction but think it comes with R29 airtime loaded-not much but should get her started. The 076 prefix is Vodacom's latest- not a Joburg number.
Hope your daughter enjoys UCT.

@bhyde 076 phone numbers belong to Vodacom SA.When you dial 100 you can receive unlimited calls for the next 6 months.When you load you 1st airtime on your super 6 pack ,it will, give you 10 FREE LOCAL SMS once of only.The airtime values you can buy are R29,R55,R110,R275 and R1000 which gives you R1100 credit.Recently a SMS airtime was launched which cost R49 and it gives you 150 local sms.......For infomation on any Vodacom products visit www.vodacom.net or ask any question here and i will reply

Hi Ben,
just to double-check:
Is her unlocked GSM phone a tri-band or quad-band cellphone? If it is, there should be no problem.
If you are unsure, the specs for her phone will more than likely be available to check at www.gsmarena.com.
As the US uses the following dual band GSM frequencies,GSM 850 and GSM 1900, it will be different to SA's dual band GSM 900 and 1800.
Tri-band is (usually) GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900, and quad band (like on a few Motorolas etc.) has all 4 GSM frequencies, as the quad prefix implies.

Uthetha - Thanks for the reminder about the GSM bands; pretty sure we are ok, but will double check.
Anybody know, assuming I'm right, and there aren't any minutes in this kit - can I buy some recharge minutes on the net some place?
