@ Jojo,
Taken from the first link I posted:
'New Top-Speed Derestrictor and Timing Retard Eliminator for Suzuki GSX-R1000 K5 05.
The plug ‘n play TRE overcomes the top speed limiter on GSXR1000 K5. It also provides much better part-throttle response and increased torque (with reduced on-off jerkiness) in the first 4 gears by bypassing separate retarded ignition maps which are designed to ‘soften’ the bike’s performance to avoid wheelies and wheelspin.
This unit tricks the bike's ECU into thinking it is still in 5th gear when you select 6th to avoid the speed limiter activating at 186MPH. Because of this the digital gear display will show '0' in neutral and '5' in all other gears.'
LOL, superbike hackers...

@ J-Man,
You mean the speed of the bike altered (i.e. derestricted to go above 300km/h), not just the speedometer...
@pop - If so . . . then I guess they should make a FIX-speedos in all of the bikes @ 300 km/h, as that's the maxium allowed speed for it - right

I think they still show off the extra km/h on the speedo's to indirectly 'advertise' what the bike is truly capable of, if it was derestricted, of course...

@pop - Hackers indeed
I remember my classmate once told me that in his R1, the computer-box (if that's what it is called) will NOT give the rider the 3rd GEAR, UNLESS he has reached the required SPEED on the said - gear . . . is there any truth to this Also, he said that the speed given by the computer-box is quite different if you are riding the bike on a mountain compared to that if RIDEN at sea-level pavements
Bike are really gettin' complicated by the year . . . That's why I am NOT disposing my BMX-bike up till now !

@ Jojo,
I don't know about the R1 having those limitations, mate. Both my TL1000S and ZX6RR are fuel-injected and there's no hassles selecting any gear at various revs. The Kwak in particular is a recent model too (2004).
The Hayabusa and ZX12R that I rode (both belonged to friends) in SA also had no such quirks either.
HOWEVER, on carburettor models, because the air is thinner at altitude (ie. mountains) compared to the denser air molecule concentrations found at sea level, one has to fiddle with the lean and rich mixture setting, if the bike is ridden in 2 very different altitudes.
The newer fuel-injected bikes should be able to automatically compensate with air pressure/density fluctuations to ensure proper fuelling etc.
Yeah, vehicle technology has come a long way...
