what device were they testing here? prototype? review device? retail device?
*the antutu benchmark score is incredibly low
*the display is very poor with a 500:1 contrast ratio, even lower than the xperia z's
*the photos taken were all grainy and washed out ( their sample photos here)
I thaught the same... especially for the benchmarks... they are bery low... I've seen 34000 points in AnTuTu and a lot more points in others benchmark... very strange
@dalmac and moogoo
exactly for this reason Sponse said that bezel and dimensions were highly subjective

recombu's Sony Xperia Z1 review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rj5bInhLm0
basically they say the phone is EXCELLENT, MINUS *drum roll*:
1. the screen is disappointing because it's washed out, viewing angles are not good, and it's not enjoying reading text in it.
2. the screen scratches easily because of sony's screen protector. they said that in future video they will show how to remove the screen protector (?). what screen protector are they talking about? why is it there if scartched easily? is it hard to remove?
3. the loudspeaker is disappointing. it's just not loud.
SONY, DO YOU READ THIS? LEARN WHAT TO IMPROVE IN THE Z2!
overall seems like a fantastic phone, i'm sure people will not be disappointed, i guess no phone is perfect.

2. Probably the same screen protector Sony uses since x10 I believe. It's protecting the display from shattering, but it's totally not scratch resistant. You can take it off, but then the screen gets easily smudged, which is hard to clean up...

And you lose the Sony Logo if you remove the anti shatter proof screen protector. |

@supercoolman - still way overpriced
@amirprog - there is a shatterproof film over the glass. they have had this since the X10. unfortunately it can scratch against keys and does scratch over time with use. It can be removed and you can place your own screen protector on the glass. People just tend to leave it on because sony does such a great job putting it on heh.
Also, that review seems strange. reading text on it isn't enjoyable? it's got 440ppi! how can reading text not be enjoyable..

Goddamn it Sony. Why are you still using crappy displays on your flagship smartphone, when every other device (Laptops, Tablets, phablets etc.) use fantastic IPS displays?
I just don't understand it.
Only saving grace is that some displays appear better than others. GSM Arena's handset seems to have a phenominal display with a 1500+:1 contrast ratio. Why don't ALL of them have that same screen...? |

about the screen protector, REALLY? then what's the point of protecting the screen if it's not scratch resistance which is not less important. sony must find better solution.
on a positive note, recombu's Sony Xperia Z1 video sample (Full HD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWPW48rh398
the video samples looks really good and sharp to my unprofessional eyes, a bit hard to believe it's a phone camera, isn't it?

Exactly. And when Basil reviewed the Z a while back, he said reading books on the display of the Z was fantastic to read on or words to tthat effect. How can the display on the Z1 be any worse?

Better, brighter displays?
Displays with higher contrast than the handset that he got to review?
EDIT:
Competition has gotten better since the Z came out. Aside from the very rare HTC J Butterfly/Droid DNA, the Z was the first 1080p smartphone. Though the display quality wasn't the best, it was still sharper than most competition at the time. Now all flagships are 1080p and boast better displays.

That's actually done to minimize the chances of the glass shattering. And if it does, it's for your safety. It will hold all the glass pieces together to prevent them from cutting you. |

@XYZ - sure. there are more 1080p screens out there. and what you're saying is fine if we're talking about photos and images. But it's TEXT we're talking about. Where often times, the only colors are black and white. The main point of consideration with text is resolution and sharpness. at 1080p and 440ppi, i'm not sure how text can be unenjoyable to read? I don't really understand the comment at all to be honest. i mean, why was it not enjoyable? he doesn't really say why. perhaps due to viewing angles again? who knows..
@unknown.. what you're saying is correct. I just wanted to add that any high quality screen protector film will do the same thing with the added benefit of being scratch proof at the same time. But, these high quality screen protectors tend to change the color/contrast of the screen slightly and are much more noticeable than the sony shatterproof film.

i'm totally with you!
as a tech geek that loves sony products i expect them to be the best of the best in smartphone screens. to me, htc one screen looks overall the best and g2's screen is the second (please don't talk to me about amoled screens, their colors are just unnatural, these bluish greenish tints...). sony needs to put MOST of their focus on the screen for the z2 and the the following flagships. better screen then xperia Z is a nice progress, but the competition doesn't care.
another thing i don't understand about the screen - why aren't sony making the screen also scratch resistant? so what if it's shatter proof? how does that prevent it from being also scratch resistant?

why anticipate shatters? why not just design the phone to be less prone to shattering? ...like creating a rubber lip around the glass so it does not immediately get in contact with the floor once it drops. it's useless using a scratch-resistant glass if it's going to be covered by some scratch-able plastic.

^it's glass. it will shatter given the right conditions and impact. Though, I agree they should make it out of material that is also scratch resistant. Although, the reason I believe it isn't made of scratch resistant material is because there isn't a scratch resistant material out there that can be thin enough to be unobtrusive and also not affect the viewing experience in any way. As I said in a post earlier, even the highest quality 3rd party screen protectors effect the viewing experience in some way.. and they tend to change color over time. Sony is probably using the film as shatter protection but also does not want to interfere with the viewing experience.
@amirprog - the glass itself IS scratch resistant. it's just that the shatterproof film they place on top isn't.
