I've always said that SE should dump Symbian and I still maintain that to this day! If Symbian was a case of merging S60 into UIQ then Symbian would've had a chance.

I agree with pavlov's dog, it is time SE goes with Android and OSE thereby ensuring that their limited resources are used effectively. They can easily cut down release times with just two platforms to work on.

Nokia screwed up by insisting on S60 being the core of the 'new' Symbian OS. What do you expect when they hold so much power and SE's UIQ was not commanding as much market share as S60?

SE should do like Motorola, the latter is really firing on all cylinders and I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years's time they are back in the top 5 manufacturers bracket in term of market share.

^ Fully agree with you. Android is the future and todays S60 without any UIQ heritage is totally outdated.

Nokia switching from Symbian to MeeGo on Nseries....
So Symbian couldn't do it....

But I stongly believe - Android AND WP7 is the way to go.
It will be a great platform, maybe not at start but later for sure.

MeeGo is a force to reckon with in the smartphone OS's. It will surely give Android and WMP7 run for their money once a more advanced version has been finalized.

What if Nokia sold the Symbian Foundation to SE or Sony, would Symbian's glory be revived? I still rememeber clearly the UI concept of SE for UIQ and it was amazing, more like an early version of SE's Android UI Layer.

meego schmeego.. even the name of the OS itself doesn't sound very marketable. The game has drastically changed. It's all about third party support now. without an app market, an OS just wouldn't survive the competition.

Apologies for the rant but as people who obviously care about tech we should at least get the basic facts straight (if we don't then how the hell will Joe Public?).

Nokia couldn't sell Symbian to SE or anyone else even if they wanted to because they don't own it! The Symbian Foundation is owned by its members. It is a company limited by guarantee, so does not have a share capital (therefore the members do not hold shares in the Symbian Foundation). Yes, Nokia are the biggest contributor (and they probably will be for some time to come) but they are just ONE of the board members (the others being Fujitsu, Samsung, SE, AT&T Mobility LLC, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcommr, ST Microelectronics , TI and Vodafone). All of this is readily available on Symbian.org and is worth reading at least once if you want to talk from a mildly authoritative position.

With regard to MeeGo, how it be a force to reckon with? There are no products to see yet and even how it will look on smartphone class equipment isn't fully known as all we've really seen is the netbook ui.

And as far as the "Nokia is dumping Symbian for Meego" myth that is floating about, take a look at this on AllAboutSymbian for the full story. Nokia have been quite open about their Symbian/Meego(Maemo) strategy for quite a while.

End of first (and hopefully last) rant.

Yeah, Schmeego or should I write Meego sounds horrible indeed! Of course, it has nothing to do with the name but I still say Nokia have a huge mountain to climb.

Meego may be quite a powerful OS but it is no longer like the old days when Symbian had no competition. Android and IOS are deeply entrenched as it is and Meego will struggle.

I don't see Meego catching up to Android and IOS, dare I say Nokia has shot itself in the foot on this one.

OK. Yes you were right about that. But as far as I know Nokia bought Symbian. Even though they donated it to Symbian Foundation, it's just their way to show that Symbian is finally open source (by looking at path that SF has taken since its foundation, you can actually see that everything has gone the Nokia's way and Nokia has the most number of phones running Symbian V1/2). So I will stand on my belief that Nokia still owns Symbian.

Having seen the video samples of the Meego running on some devices, I prefer it better than Android or WM7. And the Meego v1.1 will be released on October, 2010 which adds support for handsets and tablets. According to a document that was found hidden on meego's site, the Meego UI will be a mixed of Android and WebOS. It may be too early to tell that it Meego a force to reckon with but I am sure it will be.

September or November for a first look at something, won't be released until 2011. This is likely to be the WP7 device, no idea about anything else.

I have a feeling SE will also announce the damned Symbian 3 phone for release in Q4.

That leaked 5'' phone with slide out keypad will probably be announced. The rumours suggested that it will be released in Q3.

I just don't see SE sitting back and not release any new phones this year, they definitely have the momentum going for them and sitting back will kill that momentum. I forsee a good Q2 financial result which will force them to bring the new phones forward.

Let's wait and see.

Does anybody know when SE is going to use the Super TFT LCD from Sony, or have they already? I read on engadget.com that HTC is considering using Sony's STFT because they are running out of amoled supply.

I actually hope to see another "full-fledged" smartphone from SE. The X10 will not stand a chance against IPhone 4, HTC Evo, and Motorola Droid X in the US. Considering the fact that, among the high end Android phones, it will be the last one to get Froyo update and is still no clear information on where it is going to be sold by US carriers, X10 is facing an imminent failure in the US.

I am not even sure how good X10 is doing in Canada. Since X10's released here, I have only seen one person that actually has it. He has the white version. That's it.

@badassmam: I hope you are just kiddin, Windows as the first next high end phone available in 2011? I don't get it, where is a Satio successor? Where is a X1 successor (better screen, multitouch, up to date Android version)? They will not be announced till the beginning of 2011? That means availability later in the first half of 2011? Is the UIQ drama repeating itself all over again - meaning too little, too late? I feel like Moto got the message but SE simply do not.
