Im familiar with S60, but since the touchscreen version is fairly new in terms of its lifespan there isnt a great deal of software about. Moreso with the Satio being a SE. Just like Samsung the Satio will have fewer apps made for it than Nokia S60 devices.

As SEE09 ends (see www.symbian.org) I do wonder if anything really interesting came out of it for S60v5 as it stands.

No developers used the event to launch any amazing new apps.
SE didn't appear to say anything about the Satio or future plans.
Symbian were talking about the next generation, with some mention of making it easier for developers to get stuff on sale - but what developers are interested in S60 anymore?

Besides Epocware supporting it, with incredibly overpriced (IMHO) applications and a few other essentials, there's really nothing much out there.

Did I miss anything?

Yes, I'd say so.

We'll know more on November 3rd when SE is likely to announce its first Android effort and, from the specs circulating for some time, it looks like it's going to be something very special indeed.

If and when SE makes an Android phone with a 12MP camera and Xenon flash, plus perhaps HD video recording, I reckon they'll have nailed it. At the moment, Android suffers because HTC (the biggest player now) has no idea on cameras - from poor sensors, camera UI and lack of LED lamps - and Samsung and Motorola are still not quite there. The other problem is the lack of most Bluetooth profiles.

Android 2 fixes the Bluetooth issues, and when we get the new hi-res screens and features next year, I think Android will be near unstoppable. Not even webOS will compete, although it may do well Stateside or if Palm gets some good looking devices on the market next year.

From what I hear, the keynotes at SEE were really poorly attended and the show gets smaller each year. Symbian is dying and I am so disappointed that nothing seems to be happening to fix it, and quickly. I really don't believe that much needs to be done.

If I wasn't so busy with other things, I'd love to write a list of what I think Symbian needs to do to drastically improve its S60v5 platform without having to re-write everything (save that for the next Symbian Foundation OS). Symbian can be saved, and Nokia's V2 firmware for the N97 is a step in the right direction; but Nokia won't even be sharing this with anyone else.

Nokia will be the death of Symbian, mark my words.

According to rumors and pictures, it doesn't.
This thread is about Satio anyway.
I have read there will be a Satio Lite with "just" 8 Mp camera.
It will be announced at MWC 2010

@jmcomms

A number of us have been saying/predicting the death of Symbian for a while now, I can think of ares, Boinng and a few more.

There's talk of SE dropping one OS to concentrate on only two and we all know Android is the new king in SE's smartphone OSs so it is very much safe, which leaves Windows and Symbian to fight for it.

Windows is struggling and is not getting any attention from users while Symbian has a large user base, mainly because of Nokia, but is a loser when it comes to competing with Apple's OS, Android and even Palm's. Licensing fees versus 'open source' are what SE will have to consider.

I know I am jumping the gun here but I wish SE dumps Symbian cause in my view it serves them no purpose at all. Just look at the excellent Satio ruined by S60! I know it's not the 'new' Symbian but I bet the changes are just going to be cosmetic. Come to think of it, UIQ's death was the beginning of the end for Symbian. And to to think I lamented SE for dropping the best mobile OS ever.

It's not what you do or even how you do it but in what state of mind you do it: Dups! 2009

I am using Gamrin XT mobile on Satio. Works fine with automatic lanscape too.

The problem is when I copy the data from the Garmin original Micro SD card to the 8 Gb card, it doesn't work anymore : It asks me to buy license or to use the trial version !!

Can anyone help?
Thanks

I've heard about the 'lite' version, which would make sense purely from a point of view of getting another S60 device out quick and easy - but the Satio isn't that expensive and I reckon it will fall in price quite quickly.

If they made an Aino with a Xenon flash, or indeed put the 12.1MP sensor in, then that would seal the fate of S60 even quicker (from SE's perspective). Obviously, that sensor is going to feature in many handsets next year - so I guess this is almost a given, even if there aren't any specific rumoured/leaked details as yet.

I too believe that bad as WinMo is, it might make more sense for SE to continue supporting over S60 in the future, if they want to have any chance of getting into the business arena - where there's quite a lot of money to be made.

I'm told that in 2010 they'll be almost scrapping entry level handsets (it's an area they never seem to have done well in) and almost every handset will be 3G - so no more quirky 2G prepay handsets. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but it seems someone is at least trying to get SE back to concentrating on high-end; which since SE's inception many years ago is how they started out.
