The S700 makes nice pictures and has probably one of the best camera's of the pack, but...
- only the inner 80% of the picture can be called 'sharp', the rest is blurry and distorted. It looks like the lens has not neen really the greatest cost.
- The camera does not handle the high lights very well, everything that is bright and white fades into a kind of haze
- apparently you can set the hiote balance, this is really necessary because the camera has the tendency to make it all a bit too blue (lack of red) buit that might be a problem with a lot of digital cameras
When compared to a real digital camera of the low-budget type, the camera in this phone is just good for fun or playing. By promoting the phone as half camera, half phone, SE is exaggerating quite a lot.
Why didn't they put a better lens in it? It might cost a bit more but the pictures would be a lot better.

I only see blurr on the left edge of pictures and its most noticable during certain lighting conditions. S700 produces much less blurr than most other camera phones I have seen. But of course, it can always bee better.

The white balance autosetting seem to be a little bit off from time to time and may need manual tweek. You can also elaborate with the exposure by switching between Evaluative metering (whole scene) or Spot mode (only the center portion of the scene is measured).

I don't think its only a question about price, but also about size. A good lens as those used in cameras are relative big and will not fit in a small camera stuffed with lot of other electronics. There are however new type of camera phone lenses on its way out. Casio I think have one, which is also capable of providing optical zoom in camera phones. Think philips has an own invention too.

There are allways suckers who pay loads of cash for inferior stuff. Put some pressure on SE to make a better device, the S700 takes worse pictures than a 1,3Mpix sony camera from 1999. Today you can buy a T610 and a canon Ixus 30 diciam for less money than the S700 and get a much better performance. Why than buy an inferior product for more money? Some might do it becouse they wanna be cool, but they don't understand that by doing that they stand in thye way of evolution. I mean, when SE can sell bad products at high prices, why should they rush making better stuff. This way they can improve phones slowly and make huge profit every time people wanna uppgrade. Making mobile phones must be one of the most profiting things, selling inferior stuff at huge prices.
If U instead take a look at the digicam market, the situation is completely different, manufacturers release their newest inventions and we all can benefit from that. Soon U vill get a new DSLR Canon with 6mpixel 1.6X crop CCD, kit lens for the same money as the S700. Of course digicam manufacturers are also holding back new technology while sellling old stuff to make a profit, but mobile phone makers must be the hugest arseholes of all times and people are just so pleased with their latest purchase that they completely forgot to look around and see the truth.
By the way, the truth is coming from Korea: the new 5mpix samsung SCH-S250 with pentax technology at the same price as the S700 here.

I hear what you say but the point is that we can not spend our lives waiting for what “might” be released in a years time….to be honest I believe that they could be putting as much as 6MP cameras into to phones……but that would be pointless, it sounds idiotic but everything has a naturally progression, we start small and hopefully know that we are on a road that will lead to the “perfect” gadget. With out being part of the process we are not amazed ! And being amazed is part of the fun! To be honest, I have several digi cameras, my “main” one is a Fuji S602…which maybe 2 years old but simply amazes me everytime I look at the some 5000 pictures I have taken with it. But even owning a camera like that I still wanted the silly little poor quality 1.3mp SE phone….Why you ask.
Because of the BUZZ !!!!!!

I really want a phone that takes the best quality pics possible. I've got a Cybershot - but don't carry it everywhere with me. I was walking down the street earlier this year and Charlize Theron was having her photo taken with people. My phone was in my hand - but my camera in a case in my bag. The chance was lost. Plus. if you are out at an event be it a gig, party or football match, you can get a quick snap that isn't great quality - but means a hell of a lot to you. If I'm at a wedding or somehwere where I'm happy carrying my camera - I'll take the cybershot - if not the S700 would do just what I wanted. |

From reading this forum it seems some people are getting a little hung up on 1.3mp versus full blown megapixel cameras, too expensive S700's and so on.
At the end of the day this is only my opinion but the way i see it technology is catching up and with improvements in manufacturing enabling cost to be reduced. We as consumers are already benefiting from this and with higher end phones being developed with video at 30 fps and megapixel quality it won't be long due to economy of scale that we all have greatly improved multi media technology available to us at simular prices to what we are paying today for a midrange phones.
Until then and its not far off what we have at the moment are mobile's with some excellent features, yes ok some are pretty expensive but isn't that the same for most new products on the market today ?
For me my k700 takes a pretty good picture and the S700 even an even better one. I won't be leaving my full blown camera at home when I go on holiday for a while yet, even if I had an S700. Having said that they are great for those 'I wish i had a camera' type of moments and lets face it thats pretty much what they are all about at the moment.

To be honest, i think people over estimate the s700i. I think it has the best picture quality for a phone, but doesnt match my super amazing mega fantastic cybershot 7mp! lol sorry

I tired of those my-lots-of-megapixel-camera-makes-much-better-photos-than-S700i posts!
We all know that. But we're talking about a phone here. And for a phone, it takes very good pics!

Sorry man, i love my s700 and no i dont take my cybershot with me wherever i go! I guess i just dream for the perfect phone-camera all in one mp3 playing device! I get your point but the s700 is kinda a class on its own and it needs something to compare it with! I was infact making the point that some people expect the s700 to be a digital camera giving quality shots time after time which i have found to wrong. (the s700i camera is fairly eratic)
Amazin phone tho! Really glad i got mine!!!!! |

I wasn't getting on you man. I'm glad you're enjoying your S700i, because i'm sure enjoying mine!
But all people have their expectations very high and then start comparing the pics.
The good thing about a camera phone is that you can take a pic to whatever happens in a particular moment that you don't expect, and you don't have your digi with you.
If i want to take PLANNED quality pics i get my Digi and start shooting.

wow... i must say.. S700 does hv a quality cam.... but is tat the original size or u guyz resize it?? and the blur thing as the object is far away... tats not really a big deal... thats wat they call autofocus which they focus on the main object than the far away ones... all movies use thoes techniques... i think u hv the option to focus on the near object or the far ones.... |

If the pic says "Esato Forum Picture" on the top left corner, then it's surely resized.
The forum doesn't allow big pics.
