I think that we have been too focused on the N8 camera instead of the overall software and Symbian3 versus IOS4/Android.
I for sure do not doubt that the N8 will out speck many Android phones and the iPhone4. I am just wondering how Symbian3 will fare against them.

from my point of view, Symbian^3 looks fine to me. (but i am coming form an old Java feature phone) but again we won't really know until we get the phone hands on how it really performs.
With the camera at least, we can see sample pics and videos, so its a lot easier to judge right now.

But I am not looking for an Iphone killer. I want this phone because of the camera, gps ovi maps, and hdmi primarily.
the fact that it runs Symbian really doesnt matter that much to me.

the only drawback for me is there won't be as many apps for it compared to iphone or android.. but again, thats not why i am getting this phone.

EDIT: My pre-order date got pushed back again to 10/7

I have never been a fan of the iPhone nor wanted to own one but I wish that Nokia and others would make their UI as impressive as that for the iPhone. For me it is simple, do right, do it well and it will sell.

Nokia has some great products but the interface has kept me from owning them over the years. I was a huge fan until the p990i. I have always been a fan of specks and so for me the P900, P910a and P990i were easy calls. I am now on a Samsung Omnia HD which again was an all specked up phone.

Having used symbian and those specked up phones I now want to have my cake and eat it too. Specks and UI. Hopefully the N8 captures both. I will buy it regardless though and I am not looking for an iPhone killer either.

Th fact that you say the N8 will out-spec Android phones and the iPhone4 caught my eye. For starters, the N8 has a 680MHz cpu, while the others are 1GHz. Screen is also much smaller and lower res. The only thing it beats them at is the camera spec, it's weaker in all else.

Hardware wise it's more between Satio (600MHz) and Vivaz (720MHz). Only the software should be miles ahead of Sony Ericsson.

An example of its HIGH ISO capabilities (pretty impressive, IMHO).

THIS HAS BEEN SHOT

@ ISO 750:

(the link for the full-res image: http://cdn5.fonearena.com/rita/N8_Dubai/b/N8_Dubai_10.jpg)

SIMPLY AMAZING QUALITY.

The noise reduction algorithm has managed to mantain a high resolution (look @ the bridge and @ the top of the buildings) and also a pretty acceptable level of colour saturation, whilst the noise has been kept under control.

nice!
well, there is a lot of visible noise at full res, but at ISO 750, its very impressive.
ISO 750 on my C905 would be a noisy mess.

Yeah, there´s noite, but C´mon!

ISO 750!!!

And you still can see all the details if you look at it @ Full Resolution.

The more you kill the noise, the softer and less detailed a picture become. You also lose colour saturation and dynamic range.

This is unmatched performance for camera phones.

I just wish that the guy who took these pics was a SKILLED PHOTOGRAPHER, because almost all the pics he took were shaky and out of focus...

The most steady and focused pic was that from the Mini.

BTW: The Nokia N8 has been confirmed to be launched here in Brazil during the first week of October (the launch event will take place @ São Paulo from 4th to 6th October and will be called Ovi Experience II). A large retailer called Magazine Luiza has confirmed that the first units will be sold in early October.

No there will not, but the point id like to make is where there will be less quantity, there will be more quality. Nokia apps are usually useful in some way or another and quite sophisticated. The novelty apps are usually kept to a minimum or free.

Have you ever seen the Apple iTunes store's apps ? the amount of pure novelty apps or gimmicks just there to fill the void of the iPhone 4 not being a true smartphone is terrible. In order to find something of any interest you have to search through the dregs of nonesense to find anything worthwhile or useful.

Do you know why most of the latest phones use 1ghz processors ? its because Android needs it. Its a much more intensive OS that needs more raw processing power to actually operate at the same level a Symbian powered phone can operate at. It also needs a faster CPU to ensure the phone can handle updates (1.6 to 2.1, 2.1 to 2.2 etc) and its higher screen resolutions.

I suppose its like saying a truck will need a 8 litre petrol engine, whilst a car can make do with a 1.4 or 2.2 litre engine. It doesnt mean the truck is faster or has any advantage over the car.

For want of a better way of illustrating it, Android is less sophisticated than the well established Symbian - IMHO of course !

man, the N8 is getting proclaimed a failure already by many.. Is Symbian this bad? I don't understand the hatred here toward the N8, but its not changing my mind at all. I still have mine pre-ordered

Most of these tech site's article's points are pointless, only thing they manage to nails N8 is the software.
I have pretty low expectation for ^3 OS, so surprise me Nokia.
Hardware wise, symbian OS software still dont require those big specs run, therefore the current CPU set up should be enough if Nokia software people fine tunes it.
What users should be aware is having a 1GHZ CPU a big high res screen only drags down the battery life. The dreaded Satio i am using barely last 30 hour standby, I have to have a backup battery in my pocket all the time. Phone is NOT a proper net surfing device, it seems bloody Apple has lead people think it is one, the net function has some what over taken the actual phone function.
I stress time after time, today's battery technology does not allow phones to be long lasting net device. IT defeats the purpose for a MOBILE phone when you need charger everywhere and backup battery, then the threat of running out of power when you least wants it to be.

For all those believe mobile phone is Phone > Camera > net device, N8 is just right... (provided its battery stands up to the test, that is realistic usage for 48 hours minimum)
For those think Mobile phone is Net Device > Phone > camera. Get the iphone and all the android bunch.

Ipad type device is a proper mobile net device, not a phone!
