The retina display looks great although I was disappointed that Apple felt pressurized to join the mega pixel race and bump up the camera to 5 MP. It would have been much better if they had stayed at 3MP and used the large backside illuminated sensor
But bear in mind that they made the sensor larger, they didn't just cram more pixels in to the same space - in fact the pixels are of the exact same size of the 3GS's - so in effect those 3MP of the exact same size are still there, just surrounded by another 2MP to increase the quality.

do the extra 2 megapixels increase the quality? or just the size of the pic?

I think so. Especially if you print your photos on anything larger than 4x6" paper. Having seen the samples I'd say that iPhone 4 photos would look pretty decent even on A4 paper.

Well I guess both really - it would be a larger picture of the same definition compared to a pic from the 3GS - but if you were to then resize that picture to the same as a 3GS pic, it would be higher definition than the 3G's (similarly if you tried to stretch the 3GS's picture to fill the same space it would appear lower quality).

I believe the quality improves; while the larger size is a given. Only testing one in the store - sending it to yourself via Email to view (not on your current iPhone ~ but your PC/Mac) will be the real world test.
Here is a coding idea:
Make an app that can use the camera and Gyroscope to make either 3D pictures (overlapping views of current pictures) or a QuickTime VR type picture - think of Panoramic x3D. To be honest I'm surprised this wasn't already done yet.

Yeah that's the only saving grace, they've increased the sensor size proportionally. I was thinking what they could have achieved by keeping the camera at 3MP with the physical sensor size of the new sensor.
I guess I'm a little partial to the 3MP spec since the best picture quality from camera phones I've used is from my K790 and 2048x1536 is more than enough to share/view on the PC. |

I dont know why apple didnt cram 8 mp into the sensor like sony ericson did with the w995 which every1 thought has a great camera cos of the high mp count. The majority of people who will buy the iPhone 4 will think: higher mp = better quality (i would bet most people across the world think this to)
Imagine the hyp: an 8 mp cam with hd video.
Now that its 5 mp people will say 'average camera' if it was 8 they would say it was outstanding.
But instead, they have increased sensor size, It seems like stevey bobs actually cares more about the quality of the camera than its marketing.
@kreacher
I dont think the camera in any phone is meant to critiqued full size or phone manufacurors should care much about sensor size because: the sensor will always have to be small and compacts will always be better.
for people concerned enough they should buy a small camera not a phone.
IMO they should have made it 8 mp cam due to widesread ignorance of mp count.

No matter how good the CPU, screen or how many apps that is on the AppStore to the iPhone 4, then i will never ever buy that phone because of this.
For me it seems like that those who buy the iPhones only thinks about how many Applications there are on the AppStore and then just ignore that the phone even would be working 60% as a phone.
Here is an example on that.

The CNET UK article you linked has this summary which I think sums up why the iPhone still is so popular even with all the faults people find in it:
The iPhone sucks -- so what?
If the iPhone is inaudible, unconnected, on fire and out of battery, why is the thing so popular? The fact is, although the iPhone is the worst phone in the world, it's the best handheld computer there is. Web browsing is a revelation, it's a fantastic music- and movie-playing iPod, and it's easy as pie to install thousands of apps that do everything from editing your photos to tuning your guitar. And unlike its competitors, its responsive touchscreen and crystal-clear user interface make tapping away on the iPhone a real pleasure.
Making calls just isn't what it used to be, back when Grandpa used to dial by shouting down the party line at the operator. Many of us prefer Facebook and text messages to chatting on the phone, and the home phone is dying out altogether. Meanwhile, for some of us, finding a new venue without a little Google Map help is like trying to navigate by the stars, and we can't bear to wander without Wikipedia. For all these features that make smart phones live up to their names, the iPhone does a bang-up job. Just don't try to actually make a phone call on one.
Having said that, the issue with call quality is not an issue where I live. Here in Oman my iPhone doesn't drop more or less calls than any other phone I have used.

prices are not expected to be announced until the 15th when it becomes available for pre-order.
I'd expect contract and payg prices to be similar to 3gs when it launched last year
