@osmano:
simple math. P1 has 128MB RAM, P990 has 64MB.
P990 has roughly 18MB available after bootup, i.e. it uses approx. 46MB.
if P1 uses about the same, given similar hardware specs and memory consumption, it will have 128-46=82MB RAM available after bootup.
So roughly 4x as much RAM as the P990's 18MB |

What a fiasco from SE once again replacing the P990 so soon as it was expected! Am glad I sold my P990 after 2 months getting on my nerves without loosing anymore money!!!
Am so happy now with my P310.

The real issue is the RAM issue. Just saw a P1i video of the user interface by rog, when he opened a new web page it said too many web pages open. Although its not necessary error, its not good to see. It took me back to the early p990 days.
One thing I was really hoping for was a much improved web browser, maybe Opera 9 (as good as wm) with flash support, opera drag and scroll (iphone scrolling) and good zoom features. The browser is far behind all the rest, nokia, wm internet explorer, iphone and other opera. It just seemed clumsy and cluncky though I haven't used it with a recent fw. Has it improved? |

P1 has transflective display, which is very expensive, so guys don't expect to be really cheap.

Why argue? Cant you see the trend. The successor to P990 will also be the successor to P1. In other words P1 is the interim p-series till the next one comes along in 2008. M-series is dead. SE got burnt from p910 to p990 that it is logical to take it slower so that it can concentrate on a non-TS lower priced smartphone.
not interested in the trend, interested in what the sonyericsson senior staff were 'actually' saying to me face to face last night at the product annoncement.
trust me, this is the M600 replacement. the p990 replacement will be next

P1 has a 3.2mp cam, although its focal length is only 4.8mm, compared to 5.5mm on the P990.

How much difference would this make in exposure, lighting etc? |

Come on guys, get over it and actually discuss the phone..
It's obviously an M600 upgrade, everything from the keypad to camera and 802.11 wireless.. let alone the form factor. Phones are technology, technology development regardless of its function moves at a rapid pace. Of course new products will be released to update/re-align previous models, so don't get yourselves into a hissy fit when your current phone becomes equalled by a lesser product line/a better product is brought to the marketplace.
This is of course what the M600 'should have been', but it's also almost 1 year on and the lack of connectivity and camera have been addressed. Yes, it also has more memory most likely in account of the issues experienced with the P990, but don't forget - the P990 is also 'getting on a bit' now, so rest assured, I'm sure SE will have an update in line designed to attempt to restore its flagship smartphone to the former glory held by its predecessors.
I for one liked the P800, then used my P900 for 2 years, didn't get a P910 as it wasn't enough of an upgrade and I wanted WIFI. The P990 arrived and I almost went for it, but the bad press and experiences of some users put me off.. plus the realisation that I no longer wanted to have such a bulky phone. I looked at the M600 as the design was to my taste but it lacked the connectivity.
The P1 looks much more favourable - I do like it, but, - now don't start the cries and keep the toys in the pram - I'm an Apple user and the iPhone does very much appeal to me.. depending on release dates though I seriously think the P1 could be a viable stop gap for me as a long time Ericsson/SE user and advocate.

again and again. do read the previous posts on this thread before you post. the discussion we have regarding whether or not the p1i is the successor of the p990i, batesie (who was at the unveiling) and ares among others has clearly stated that this is not the case.
forget the addition of the camera and how the m600i is not supposed to have one, the p1i IS the successor to the m600i. why is it rebranded under P series, nobody knows. maybe the M series is dead (and I don't see why not, given the domination of Nokia's E series), but that's another story. for now, I for one can be sure that the p1i is in logic indeed a replacement for the m600i, and the replacement for the p990i is yet to be seen. so give it some time, I'm sure we're due a replacement, a real successor for the p990i soon.
what's so wrong with having 2 types of phones in the P series anyway? |

Hi Ares,
That is good news if you are right but if they only announce it towards the end of the Year when will it launch? As just the P1 in a year is not enough we all want something to desire and want to own and really we want or now or very soon.
Marc

The P1 is a great upgrade to the M600 (whether it is or not is besdie the point - from a practical point of view, it's an M600 with camera and wifi)
However it has the main disadvantage for me which is the lack of 5 way control (joystick or dpad, either would be better than nothing).
Personally I'd prefer a dpad and small number keypad than the full qwerty keypad.
My hope for an SE symbian phone is a slide formfactor similar size xda mini -qvga touchscreen, 5 way controller, but with a slide that reveals the camera on backside and a keyboard on the front. I don't care if the keyboard is qwerty or not, since I use the touchscreen for handwriting recognition - but my main beef with the qwerty keyboard is it takes up room on the front. So if it's hidden under a slide it doesn't matter to me if it's qwerty or just a number pad.
Add to that 3.2MP camera with AF, wifi (b is okay but g would be better), qvga video recording, umts hdspa (EDGE is no good to us here in australia so I'm not fussed about EGDE), Opera default browser, touchscreen.
So far I've never seen a phone that fullfills those requirements, not from SE or anyone. The main idea being a small device with most of the front taken up with a touchscreen (to maximise screen size), a 5 way controller, a hidden keyboard, and a quality camera with active lense cover.

Even though it does have more memory, I would consider the P1 a downgrade from the P990. P1 and P990 are distinctly different in design concept as M600 vs. P990. A P990 replacement would have the same form factor as the P990 to give users two product lines. Also I'm not very keen on internal GPS, I find it inconvenient to use and a battery drainer. The P990 replacement needs to have big differences not just cosmetics touch-ups for people to trade in their P990s.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD |

I'm sure that pretty much all of these will be sorted with the P990 successor. I agree with the internal GPS though, they just seem to me like a complete waste of time and extra bulk and weight that 70% of the time would never get used (at least in my opinion).
I would much rather just have a cheap £30 bluetooth gps unit in my glove compartment which i can use on any phone i upgrade to and dont have to carry around with me permanently. I'd also quite like the choice of which software I use and choosing not to be forced to pay to have a proper GPS navigation system like in the N95 (I've paid enough for the friggin phone, why the hell should I pay MORE to be able to use it properly?)
Sorry, anyway. Back to the P1i:
I will defiantely get one, but I've only just got an M600i. The camera ont he back is kinda off-putting for me. I can imagine it getting very broken very quickly, although WiFi would be nice.
I still don't get what all the hyps about g is. In my house B works a damn sight better than G - I always get MUCH better range and MUCH MUCH better response. Although, there are 13 computers in my house sharing two wired and one wireless network.
