Many of my mp3 files are in 320kbps..
Try that for a decent sound quality.

good shit. That's what I'm now aiming for. Any songs I download I try for 320, but usually the best you can find is 192 (that's in mp3 too).
When ripping from cd I'm now using 320Kbps mp3 also. Will slowly get around to re-ripping my most listened to stuff. Unless AAC becomes more widespread (for example available on most mp3 players), I won't be ripping my music collection to AAC, but I do maintain a separate AAC music collection for the phone. I am only aiming for max 192Kbps in this collection since it's for the phone, not general listening. (the phone max. is 192). whenever I need a song out of my mp3 collection to put on the phone I can either use it as is, or re-rip to AAC if I need to save space. I expect one day my 192Kbps AAC collection will become largely reduntant, but that's life. It's still simpler for me to maintain the two collections.
I am not really worried about having to re-rip large numbers of files when I need to, courtesy of 1.2GB RAM and dbpoweramp right click batch processing.

Tbh, i dont see the point in encoding mp3 files higher than 128kbps when from CDs. Im not an audio expert, but of all my CD collection most files on the CDs are encoded by default in 128kbps.
So, increasing the bitrate surely cannot improve the sound quality from the original source file ? surely ?

We know that, but it cannot improve sound quality over the original source file.. or am i wrong.. ?

Taken from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Book_(audio_CD_standard) bit rates for audio cds are more than 1411kbps
Why does the above link go to Esato?

audio on a cd is in uncompressed pcm format. A 320Kbps mp3 still comes nowhere near the quality of a cd track. 320Kbps mp3's are called "cd quality" but that is a generalisation and it only means "near cd quality".
CD most definitely is recorded at MUCH higher than 128Kbps (as the other guy said over 1000Kbps). You can rip MP3's at 320Kbps and still hear discernable differences compared to the cd original, although for that you need pretty good ears.
I am assuming that your CD collection are manufactured CD's and not mp3's converted to audio cd? I don't know how you got the impression that CD audio is 128Kbps but it's dead wrong. I suggest you check your ripping software, it may only support up to 128Kbps ripping.
A CD track ripped to 192Kbps AAC is better quality than one ripped to 128Kbps AAC, so you are letting yourself down if you rip your cd's at 128Kbps. You are also not getting the most out of your phone which can support up to 192Kbps. If you only use 128Kbps on the phone, then ripping from cd direct to 128Kbps AAC is fine, but keep in mind that the tracks can sound a lot better, especially if you use your AAC collection for general listening (ie: when not using the phone for music).
However if you rip the cd to 128Kbps MP3 first, then it won't be as good quality as is possible with a direct cd to aac 128Kbps rip.
Basically I would advice (depending on disk space) that you rip MP3's to atleast 256 Kbps, and AAC to atleast 192Kbps (or possibly 128Kbps if only used for the the phone), on the basis that AAC can use about 25% smaller bitrates than mp3 for the same quality.

I'm doing between 96 and 128Kbps depending on the source, when I get a 2GB mem stick I'll start using 192Kbps aac. CD's I've started to rip to 320Kbps MP3, which I can then use to make 192 or 128Kbps m4a, as needed.

Like i said, im far from an expert on this matter.
I think i read it somewhere that most CD tracks are encoded in 128kbps or something. False information or what.

You get that....
Maybe they were just trying to say that MP3's are usually ripped to 128Kbps from CD? 128Kbps is the most common bitrate for MP3's

No idea, possibly. Ive never really been all that interested in the mp3 format until i got my K750i, i used to just put a few on my pda and listen to them on that.

here is the SE page showing M600 compatible accessories
