Buddy, Japan is a "test bed" for new products for most of the local and some international companies. The P-series showed promis in the begin with the original release but failed to capitalize on that.Because the developing costs where quite high SE had to price it accordingly, which ment that only a specialized (and fairly small) market bought it ! Also the royalties SE had to pay to Nokia for every sold device played a smaller rolle into its demise.(it uses a form of symbian operating system which is a Nokia development) Althou the SE fans badly want a 'upgrade' so far no official announcements have been made.I personaly liked the P800 and I hope to see a P1000 this year or early next year. One thing is for sure. That marked is strongly dominated by Nokia with their 9xxx line up (and in a lesser extent the 7710)lets wait and see. :-)

backl to topic. it seems foolish for the other brands to neglect EDGE. The platform is sure to
grow, seeing how expensive it is to set up a 3g network.

Hi guess the other brands have realized Nokia basically has the EDGE market under complet control. Resistance is futile ;-)

Yep. And what a shame that is too. I think that is really holding them back. Even new se's dont have them.

Given the results of the Edge user poll so far it would seem edge is, like the single using poster, a minority for people. It certainly does depend on your country for instance wether or not edge seems important.
It may be important in the US, but then again so is decent hand sets. Recomended a friend to get an there lately and they couldn't find a thing, the only decent phone their carrier had was the RAZR.
@psychomantis: I doubt are deliberately doing ANYTHING to India. They have edge cards so they're certainly not neglecting the travelling business man with a laptop in india.
As has been pointed out, price seems to be an important issue in india, even if they released the an edge phone for India there would there be sufficient sales to make it worth the time? I doubt it. (Simply because if they did it would be a mid to high end phone, and those don't seem to go down to well there)
The other point to take into consideratoin is while some carriers may offer edge within a country, how much is edge taken up by the consumer in the country where its available. |

@mario - i should have been more clear. i meant popularity-wise. anyway, i'm gonna say it here and now. i think edge is growing and 3g is dying (i am really not trying to start an argument) and that's why and other manufacturers aren't implementing it. i think edge is faster even right?

Edge isnt that much faster than GPRS when i tried it.
i'd say that 3G will be the next generation in the UK as Orange UK have dropped plans to support Edge in the UK, and all other networks have invested heavily in 3G and not Egde.
(EDGE is just jumped up GPRS or also known as EGPRS)

i think that edge in the UK is different than in the US. edge over here is about 384Kb/s unshared.

@psychomantis: it isn't just who offers it, its coverage (is 100% of india covered?) and how many of the subscribers have taken it up (It won't be 100%, i'll bet you that right now)

Wherever there is gprs there is edge u dont have to pay extra. usage is only restricted by compatibility of phone .
