HPM-10 and winXP - help! |

I live in Australia, and had the same problem.
I have found a device called the "Uno SD/MMC Reader/Writer" available from http://www.conexus.com.au which does the trick perfectly for $69au.
Its USB1.0 and USB2.0 compatible (tested on both) and simply plugs in and detects instantly as a Removable Disk.
If anyone in Australia has the same problem, ignore SonyEricsson's comments about their phones not supporting XP, there is always a way around it.
Also, commenting on the above about leaving it unplugged while booting and using the device manager to refresh ... I tried it and my machine rebooted, which is what prompted me to purchase the USB Reader. |

Don't buy another reader. Since you already paid money for the Ericsson product, you should get that one working and that is all you need! As promised, here is the link to the driver download.
Link
The HPM-10 which I bought comes with a SanDisk MultiMediaCard (MMC) and I think they all do. If you check out the driver download page at the above link, select SDDR-11 as that's the model that comes with the HPM-10. When you go to the driver download page, you'll see that Windows XP is not supported. Don't believe them
I downloaded the drivers for Windows 2000 and installed them on both my desktop (Windows XP Pro) and my laptop (Windows XP Home) and they both worked like a breeze with the HPM-10. The important thing to remember when installing is to be sure that the card is inserted in the reader otherwise Windows might not detect the reader. If it works, you should see an extra drive added to My Computer and you just copy/paste your mp3 files to that drive and enjoy the music!
If you have any problems with it, let me know, I think I've run into most problems while installing it so I might be a good help
Good Luck!
Cheers,
Mimzo

Strange. I didn't get the BSOD when installing. I got it the first time around when I tried installing the MMC reader/writer with the drivers that came with it but when I installed the downloaded drivers, it worked fine.
I'll try to install it on another Windows XP Pro machine other than the one I've already done and let you know how it goes.

A very interesting think for us all to be mentioned is WHAT CHIPSET your motherboard uses!! i think that the mmc reader works with intel chipsets but not with via's. At least not in my via based mobo with the latest 4-1.
Papajohn
PS. Yes it is installed,i can boot without the blue screen after a win xp reinstallation(before i was getting a bsod) but system is sth more than unstable while the mmc reader is on. I restarts from time to time if i stress it up a little.
And sth else,in a win98 installation there is a prog that sits in the systray and shows data activity to the mmc. i cant get it to work in xp though. |

@Papajohn
I'm using a new mobo that has a VIA chipset and an AMD Athlon processor - works fine. Haven't tried Intel but I guess it works if it's working for you

Mimzo,
How did you plug in the keyboard in your laptop without the keyboard connector?
I have the same problem! |

I also get a blue screen of death when i boot my winxp box up with the mmc reader attached. What you have to do is unplug the serial plug (but not the keyboard) when you boot up, then when it's loaded, plug it in and detect it using system-> hardware (I think) in control panel.
Far too much bother for me, I just ended up installing it on my win 98 box which works fine, but VERY slow.
Does anyone else find that the track order that the phone uses is completely random - seems to bear no resemblance to the alpabetical/numeric order of the tracks, or the order they are copied to the reader, (and yes I am selecting 'play all, not random!!). |

I still haven't figured out a workaround for the keyboard connector on my laptop
The only way I can send mp3s to and from the reader is using my desktop - I'm sure there has to be a way...

The track order is not random. The phone shows the tracks in the order in which they are saved to the multimedia card. The problem is that when you are copying tracks to the MMC using Windows Explorer, the tracks are not copied to the card in alphabetical order - this time the order really seems to be a random one.
If you want to have the tracks in certain order in the player menu, just copy them to the card one at a time - the first file on the card will be #1, the second #2 and so on.
If you are planning to change the files often, the easiest way to get the files in the order you want to the card is to create a .bat file (use Notepad, save as .txt and change the file extension) and add numbers in front of the MP3 tracks. I am using a bat file with the following lines:
copy c:\hpm10\01*.mp3 f:\
copy c:\hpm10\02*.mp3 f:\
copy c:\hpm10\03*.mp3 f:\
...
copy c:\hpm10\99*.mp3 f:\
(substitute c:\hpm10 with the folder in which you have the tracks and f:\ with the drive letter of your MMC reader)
As the phone won't recognize more than 99 tracks on a MMC in any case, this is an universal solution. Just add numbers 01, 02, 03 and so on in front of the file names of the tracks in the order you want them to play and run the bat file to copy the files to the MMC. Just notice that the MMC reader is a slow one and it can take a long time to fill an 128M or 256M card. Remember also that the MMC must be formatted with FAT16 file system as the HPM-10 does not recognize FAT32 or NTFS and you can only fit about 124 or 243 megabytes to the largest cards I have tried to figure out how to decrease allocation unit size to minimize the waste space but with no success.
I have also found out that HPM-10 reads MP3PRO files too, in addition to the basic MP3 files. By using this format it is possible to achieve higher sound quality with lower bit rates. However, I'm still trying to figure out the FAT16 cluster size problem (it seems that PartitionMagic does not work with removable drives). If anybody knows how to format an 128M or 256M MMC card with smaller clusters (and less wasted space), please let me know. |
