With all the Playstation Portable news floating around this week, I'll go ahead and post a couple little pieces of information that may be of interest to you.
First off, many people have been wondering how Sony is able to offer the PSP "at such a low price." The answer lies in its manufacture -- "close to 50%" of the components of the PSP are Sony-made. Obviously, this includes most of your game components, such as the Emotion Engine. But what parts aren't? The LCD is an ASV LCD from Sharp. While that's the only company name mentioned, other "external" parts include the memory and wireless LAN LSI.
A NikkeiBP article states that Sony plans on shipping 200,000 PSP units on release week, and 100,000 units per week thereafter. Within 2004, they plan on shipping a total of 500,000 units, and before the end of FY'04 (March 2005), the company plans on sales of over 1,000,000 units.
Some PSP quotes (all from Ken Kutaragi, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO):
"Even our employees were suprised [about the price]."
"The iPod only plays music, and it's 40,000 yen."
"We really waited to the last minute to decide [the price] this time. It was a secret even within the company. I didn't even tell my wife."
"We wanted to get that price 'sweet spot' right from the start."

Obscured by the news of the PS2’s surprisingly competitive pricing and decent battery life was the tidbit from NTT DoCoMo that they’re opening up their payment platform to companies outside their walled garden of i-mode cellphone sites. Specifically, it looks like they’ll be letting Sony PSP owners download games and other content directly to their new console and pay for it on their cellphone bills.

Holy Crap! This is a decent system.
It's got lots of connectivity:
IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi)
USB 2.0 (Target)
Memory Stick PRO Duo
IrDA
IR Remote (SIRCS)
Pity no bluetooth. Lets just hope the Sony boffins have embedded a damn web browser in the device. Put that Wi-Fi to good use! |

I still get cravings for an Atari lynx when I see portable gaming though.. Maybe its just a love of California games?
Either way this should be a nifty lil gadget.

Speaking in an interview with Japanese site Impress PC Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has admitted
that graphically intensive game will drain the PSP's battery more rapidly than the quoted figures.
"A puzzle game will last longer, but Ridge Racer will probably be shorter than that," he told the site, referring to the battery life
statistics released by SCE last week - which claimed four to six hours of battery while playing games.
The figures quoted by SCE rely on playing with headphones, without using the wireless multiplayer capabilities of the device, and
with screen brightness set in a specific range - leading to widespread speculation that using the full power of the system will bring
the battery life down closer to the originally rumoured two hour level.
Kutaragi's comments seem to confirm that games which use the features of the console more intensively will drain the battery life
faster, and are backed up by the firm's efforts to restrict developers from using features such as data streaming from disc (as
used in a large number of PS2 titles) due to their high power consumption.
The SCE boss was adamant, however, that the battery life problem would be solved in future - telling the interviewer that "in the
future, we'd like a single charge to last for a flight between Narita [Tokyo] and New York" - a fourteen hour trip.
He cited the Sony Walkman as an example of battery technology progress, pointing out that the device had started off with an
exceptionally short battery life. However, he stopped short of saying that the company plans to upgrade the battery technology in
future revisions of the PSP, instead focusing on the possibility that developers will find ways to optimise their games to use the
battery life more efficiently.
The implication is clear, however, and Kutaragi's comments will undoubtedly be taken as a tacit admission that there is a problem
with the PSP's battery life - and that the firm may be hoping to fix this in a later revision of the hardware.
Whether this problem is likely to scare off early adopters or not is a major question - but Sony is certainly being conservative in
its shipment estimates for the device. Reports today indicating that the company expects to ship three million units of the device in
its financial year, compared with Nintendo's projection of four million units of the similarly-priced Nintendo DS console, citing this
as the ceiling of its production capacity for the system.
Looks like they pulled another 'Sony'. Gonna be fun a fun day out with one of these, lol. |

PlayStation Portable billboards — So close, yet so far away…
Seriously, Sony, how badly do you want to torture us? 3Yen has some pics of a bunch of billboards they’ve just installed in the Toyko subway with actual working models of the PlayStation Portable behind plexiglass. And yes, they already anticipated that someone might be tempted to do a smash-and-grab, and so despite Japan’s notoriously low crime rate they’ve hired three security guards to keep an eye on things just in case.
