I cant see that a guy at store level would be told about such a release be . The only people that would have been told (possibly) would have been the procurement bosses at head office. If all store staff had meetings with then wouldnt have any time to design, make and sell it phones. Seems a bit funny to me.

I realise you offer this information in good faith however the quality of information staff have in CPW stores is very dubious.

It is unlikely that a cameraphone will ever replace a digital camera, for many people taking 'snaps' this maybe OK, but for taking photos meant for keeping a meory of an event or holiday ... just forget it.

There is a reason why *good* cameras have lenses the size they have, a cameraphone will never include a lense like this!

It was thought that electricity would never catch on, or that radio had no practical military applications; it isn't very prudent forecast technological trends as being absolute. Camera phones may very well replace digital cameras if technology progresses to the point where they are inseperable.

Guys,

I am not speculating that store staff would not be privilege to such information. I work for CPW (formerly in a store and now in HQ) and I can therefore say, with a degree of certainty, that, much as I agree with Vlam that it is not so outrageous to suppose that store staff might attend seminars, they generally do not, and product training is usually given by reps who visit the stores once every month or two.

But hey, who knows? As I said, I do have a meeting with an rep at 10am on Monday morning, so I will put the points raised to him, and see what comes out and I will, of course, post the info here.

And then we will know for sure! (assuming you believe I haven't made this all up)

P.S. Of course cameras will be replaced - it's all about convergence, people! Like everything else, the top end will probably remain specialised single-function units, but why buy a seperate low-end digicam, when there is one of equivalent spec in-built in your mobile?

I doubt they will replace the digicams completely. The less rich people won't buy phones with that good cameras, as they are to expensive even by then. The richer people might buy them, but then they can buy a good digicam aswell. It looks better to take pictures with a digital camera, than running around with a cellphone taking them during the vacation.

I disagree, mobile phones are evolving into more than just phones. We can already see them being used in a variety of different ways and I believe that over the next few years we shall see mobile phones become an essential tool for every day life. Why buy a seperate camera when one's mobile features a camera good enough to take holiday pictures or video? This is a very plausible scenario and indeed is already fact in some parts of the world.

That isn't to say that there won't remain a market for specialist devices, high-end digital cameras may very well remain, but I don't se emuch of a future for low to medium range digital cameras.

Cameras will be replaced by camera phones, but we won't see to many phones covering sports events other than that camera phones will bee good enough for most people. Its not like its going to happen tomorrow.

That's progress for you, older technology tends to become obsolete; I believe carriage makers didn't fare too well after the introduction of the motorcar.

@pzboyz I'd beg to differ, Samsung's latest 3MP phone already has a pretty good REAL lense.

I work for an Extended warranties company, and 3G phones cannot be upgraded on normal mobile insurance no more, as they are not considered mobile phones now, so come under a different insurance category.
