Could some please tell me the advantages of using the magic word? I have looked through the manual, but as with most things on the SE's, I am sure that there is much more than what the manual says to this function.

If you didn`t have magic word then if you said a contacts name just in conversation your phone would dial.
Saying a "Magic word" tells the phone that you will soon be saying a word that you intend p800 to use as a dialing command.
It sets the phone up for using vioce dialling.

so what's a word that I can use that will never accidentally set off my p800 to call peeps. cuz i tried "p800" and it goes off all the time.

They should have called it a magic phrase cuz one word never works right.

You don't have to use one word you know!!!! My old "Magic Word" on my R520 was "Activate Comm Link" ... the phone doesn't really care whether it's one word or three... as long as it fits in 2-3 seconds.

My current word is just "Communicator"... P800 recognizes it just fine, no accidental calls. Remember, "P800" might come up in a conversation a lot... specially around people who want it, never seen it before, or are planning to buy it.

It has to be a word, or phrase, that isn't common... and it MUST be distinct! Don't use words that are easily confused with common everyday words.

And record your "Magic Word" at arms length from your mouth, this way, the phone will compensate for volume, and slight echo.
