Online update service for Mac users? |

Exactly the same thing happened to me with VPC, 70% and kaput, phone no longer works. Tried numerous time using recovery mode + trying to recover it on a real PC with the Firmware data files installed... no luck at all. I've since put it in at a SE service centre for repair... should be getting it back tomorrow, hopefully working again. Mac users don't do this...not worth the hassle. |

well, in that case, this thread should be renemed to "Warning for MAC users!"
It must be an issue with how VPC deals with the Mac's USB ports, I can't see any other possible explination.
I've a local service centre that can only do flashes, hopefully they'll be able to resurrect my phone. |

I've edited my first post in this thread to hopefully catch any new readers eyes about not using the service on VirtualPC...
@GothTeddy
Do you have a friend with a real PC? If so, you should be able to resurrect your phone yourself with the SE updater or TOTAL Multiserver and a credit.

i'm building a system right now, so i'll whack the dss drivers on and give it a whirl on that. I don't have a flashing cable, so i'm going to see what i can do to get my dss to work with TS.
if SE would just write mac drivers for the syncstations, all this would be avoided...

Well, what a load of rubbish!
I've frequently used the following setup to update both a p900 AND a k700i...
•Apple Mac G4, Dual processor
•Virtual PC (BOUGHT legitimate version)
•Windows XP (Legit version) NOT SP1 (Read my lips—NOT SP1 as speccd by Sony)
•DSS 25 Cradle (came with the p900)
•OPERA browser, with Opera's default install of the Sun java system
It works just as efficiently as when I perform the update from my PC at work.
From home, i am on ADSL, 1 Mbit. The update is very quick on both the K700 and the P900. Never had a problem.
Oh, tell a lie... when I used Explorer and Sun Java, the whole thing hangs at 70%-80%. Use Opera!
Can I suggest just a couple of things...
1. Don't use explorer, use Opera. I've found it far more reliable with it's built in Java for detection etc. Explorer I found to hang frequently when using the service, which seems to use Java applets to talk between the phone/system/browser
2. Use legit software. I have heard other whines from other forum about people using VPC and Windows which they've snatched a copy either off the 'Net or off a friend. These versions are unstable to say the least. The only way to guarantee that your system is using a decent, bug-free version is BUY IT (not suggesting that you lot HAVEN'T... but it strikes me as very odd that you're having these problems)
3. CHARGE the phone fully before the update. VPC takes a tad longer than a 'real' PC to update the phone, especially if you are attempting to use a modem
4. Quit everything else on the machine running VPC and leave the VPC app in the foreground to eliminate any possible glitch during the process. Also, for the purpose of updating ONLY switch the USB sharing of the cradle on—turn off ALL extraneous shared/monopolised USB devices in the VPC prefs
Follow those rules, and I am SURE that the updater will work for you. My brother in law has also managed the update on his Mac using an older VPC and Windows system (borrowing my Cradle) and even using an internal USB/PCI card.
As far as the phone being destroyed, are you SURE it's dead?
I am rather concerned about this scare-mongery!

It's not really scare-mongering. Everybody who has tried it in this thread up until your post has had a failure. That's not just a scare its a real threat to your phone.
But, thanks for your post and the valuable tips. We'll all try Opera instead now!!!

I also had a failure at around 70%.
Tried it before reading this thread.
I've tried recovery mode on a friends PC but to no avail. (communication error)
Has anyone tried Totalserver to flash their dead phone?
I downloaded the Totalserver client but it wont launch in Virtual PC (98 or 2000).
-G4 Dual
-Virtual PC 6
-DSS 25

You're right, TOTAL Multiserver does not work in Virtual PC. I had to use a real PC.

So with all this talk of using (or NOT using) VPC to update phone firmware, are we to take it that there is no way at all to update our SE phones using a Mac, as a Mac?
Considering their fantastic support in most other SE phone connectivity aspects, this seem quite difficult to believe. |
