Is everyone confortable with releasing their MSN/Yahoo/etc sign-in credentials to third parties, as you would appear to have to do with cMessenger and Yamigo?

Yes, at www.agilemobile.com - I cannot find the J2ME version at the moment, though. Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago), the J2ME version was not free.

Why are you all looking for a Java application when an IM client is built into the phone, although some operators do disable/remove it.
My Friends connects to a Wireless Village server such as yamigo and allows you to talk in real time.
yamigo allows you to connect to msn, aim/icq and yahoo messengers.
http://www.yamigo.com/
I have a friend with the K700i and msn is not available still, yamigo say there is a conflict with the phone firmware and their server side software.

Instructions are on the Yamigo site.
Basically you setup a yamigo username, then add your msn etc. id/passwords to your yamigo id.
You then configure my friends with the yamigo server settings, as shown on their site.
Then you log into yamigo in my friends on your phone and add some contacts.
Very simple and FREE, you just pay data/GPRS charges.

I have been trying to access my MSN Hotmail today via wap to no avail.
I went to Msn's mobile page on the web and it looks like they are charging for this type of service.
Or is there a wap address out there that is different?

Create another non-important hotmail address, add your contacts to it, tell them not to read any emails from the address and tell you if somone does send them an email on that address, and use a different password, and transfer all your contacts to that address, then use that address for your mobile, and your normal one for your pc
Not sure if you're allowed to do this or not though (in hotmail terms and conditions), can't remember

Thanks for the tip, cMessenger does work great, in my experience it's much more stable than TipicME.
But @skaroger if you want to try TipicME too you can download to your phone directly via WAP at http://tipic.com/dl/tms40dl.jsp. This midlet works for Nokia Series 40. If it doesn't work on your phone, go to http://www.tipic.com, download the proper midlet and install it via IR/BT/cable to your phone. Anyway you really have to go to the website via pc to register, just like in cMessenger.

Yamigo Relase 0.10
New Year's Eve Release of Yamigo 0.10
Friday, 31 December 2004
Fixes and new features:
A long awaited fix for the double "@@" notation. From now on a buddy WV address needs to escape the first "@" by replacing it with the sequence "%2540" or "%40" depending on the phone type Eg: "wv:yamigosupport@hotmail.com@msn.com" needs to be entered in the phone as: "wv:yamigosupport%2540hotmail.com@msn.com" or "wv:yamigosupport%40hotmail.com@msn.com". Most of the users wont be required to do any changes to their buddy lists as we changed the entries in the database. All Nokia users though will need to change the entries in theirs phones as Nokia phones currently DONT download the contact lists from the server. To our knowledge all SonyEricsson and Motorola obtain the contact lists and their content at login time. As a result of this fix K700i phones WILL login to MSN. Yet please note that K700i and alike (we are not sure yet which other phones) need to encode the address with %40 sequence rather than with %2540. The best way to know which way your phone needs it is to let a first message arrive to your phone and then save the sender as a buddy rather than enterting it manually.
Support for Yahoo offline messages. Now you will be able to receive at login time all the outstanding messages from Yahoo.
Support for UTF-16 for AIM/ICQ
Yamigo Forum started
Improved UTF-8 sending for Yahoo! messaging (eg Chinese)
Upcoming in 0.11:
Automatic population of the contact lists from external sources. We are planning this new feature, yet most of the Nokia phones wont benefit from it currently as they dont download the list from the server. No ETA though.
ICQ presence update fix.
